If I'm understanding correctly 3G is an extension of GSM.

Does this mean it will also have the same distance-to-base limitations,
and situations where a handset shows steady signal but is unable to
hold a call reliably, while CDMA still manages a reliable call with one
    flashing bar?

3G is available to both GSM and CDMA.
The 3G GSM system uses CDMA technology and is not affected by distance
limitations but like all CDMA systems are affected by the number of users on
    a carrier.
Whether or not a phone can hold a call with 1 bar doesn't doesn't
    necessarily relate to distance.

Thats what he said, stupid. It does matter for GSM, not for CDMA

3GSM is 3G for GSM, EV-DO is 3G for CDMA.

3GSM uses W-CDMA underneath, not TDMA like GSM.

Which is completely irrelevant to whether a phone can hold a call with 1
bar, we had disgressed to CDMA vs GSM on that point

If my experience as a schmuck user of CDMA95, 3GSM/W-CDMA and GSM is
anything to go by, I'd say it's very relevant actually.
