After several days of being lied to by 3 Monkeys, visiting a Nokia Care
Centre and talking to the TIO regarding drop outs in fringe 3G coverage
areas 3 have admitted to deliberately removing a menu option in Nokia
phones to prevent locking the phone into 3G or GSM modes for
*commercial* reasons.
They also have decided to terminate my contract for *commercial* reasons.
This all came about due to calls being dropped continuously in fringe
areas due to /Network/ and /handset/ configurations set up by 3. This
may be no big deal in loosing a call whilst you are driving along and
having to call back once, *BUT* if you happen to be working right on the
edge of 3G coverage and the phone is continuously switching between 3G
and GSM then holding a call is impossible. 3 guesses why they have set
the network and handsets up to do this!
Because "THE TRUTH HURTS" and it would cost 3 money by customers not
having to re-establish calls (paying another 25 cent connection fee)
they have told me to return my handset, pay all outstanding fees and
port my number away from 3 within 7 days!
I am awaiting a call back from the TIO before deciding whether to
request Police to lay charges of Conduct Endangering Life against 3 for
deliberately configuring the network and their handsets to prevent me
from locking the phone into GSM or 3G to prevent these drop outs in
fringe areas to be able to call for assistance.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahah...
I'm so sorry, but I could not resist.
Simon, I beg you to go to your local police and report the matter - on the
condition that you post the reply you obtain here!
I think I already know what their answer will be....

Drop like a stone, ****wit.
You can always call 112 and it will use ANY available network regardless of
your handset config

How amusing, Rod's answer was the most mature and tempered out of the lot

Sorry to disappoint but this is not the reason. The simple fact is they
don't own their own GSM network so when you use GSM it costs them hard
dollars to pay Telstra for the airtime.

Assuming that Telstra and 3 are the only visible base stations in the
area won't he have exactly the same switching/dropout problems?

Big difference to his original claim of
"deliberately configuring the network and their handsets to prevent me from
locking the phone into GSM or 3G to prevent these drop outs in fringe areas
to be able to call for assistance."
If you had poor/fringe Telstra GSM coverage, you'd be lucky to even get Voda
or to have good Optus reception
