I know the OneTel network was basically left intact when they went
under, but I also know a lot of their sites have been ransacked by
'collectors'. So their won't be much for them to make use of!

I now some sites were still maintained after OneTel collapsed as another
companie installed/serviced them and were obligated to service an exsisting
    contract.

Yeah, utterly bizarre. And that never had anything like the coverage
of the NSW railway network, or even just the metro and close either.

Apart from the frequency allocations - which, if you bothered to read
further into it, you would find was the main reason behind the purchase.

    "CityRail to use One.Tel remains

    NOVEMBER 01, 2006

The NSW government today announced plans to spend $200 million on a
digital train radio system using the abandoned OneTel network.

RailCorp has reached an agreement with the receiver of
telecommunications company OneTel to buy necessary digital bandwidth to
provide coverage of the state's train network, Minister for Transport
    John Watkins said.

The new system would meet the Waterfall Special Commission of Inquiry
recommendation that "all train drivers, signallers and supervisors of
trackside work gangs in NSW be able to communicate using the same
    technology", he said.

The digital technology would allow CityRail to monitor a train's
location and automatically activate its brakes in an emergency.

Mr Watkins said the government had worked closely with the Australian
Railway Association and other states to ensure national consistency.

Tenders for the design of the new system will be called early next
    year, he said."

That doesnt make much sense. OneTel was just a standard 1800 GSM network.
