My wife recently travelled to America with her Nokia 5110
on the Optus network. She wasn't expecting it to roam, and
    indeed, it didn't.

But she was surprised to see someone from Australia with a
different phone, on the Virgin network, roaming.

    1. What is required to roam to America?

    2. Can you also roam to Japan?

    3. Can you send SMS while roaming in either country?

    Thanks. Paul.

A tri-band mobile - ie, something that does 1900Mhz GSM. Cingular and do
a GSM service that covers most of the country (not all states though
because they themselves have some roaming agreements with smaller ma &
    pa operators).

    I don't think the 5110 was even dual-band... 900Mhz only IIRC?

    > 2. Can you also roam to Japan?

Vodafone do a 2100Mhz 3GSM/UMTS network in Japan if you've got a normal
3G handset. And NTT's FOMA network now also talks UMTS, doesn't it?

    > 3. Can you send SMS while roaming in either country?

    Sure can.

    *nods*

Sure was... bloody good software on them though, pity about the flimsy
dual circuit board design. Those metal contacts connecting the two
boards did have a tendency to wear out

Nothing like living life in the fast lane.

    She shouldnt have been.

    > 1. What is required to roam to America?

What is generally called a tri band or quad band GSM handset.

The 5110 was about the last of the high volume products
that only had a single band which isnt used in America.

    > 2. Can you also roam to Japan?

Not as easily, essentially because they arent big on GSM there.

There is 3G support there, but nothing much with basic GSM.

    > 3. Can you send SMS while roaming in either country?

    You certainly can in America.

    Lots of money.

Better off buying a cheap pre-paid when you're there and flogging it on
    Ebay when you get home.

    ROFL!!!

Thanks everyone for the info. Our phones are a bit of an
embarassment - even third-worlders have better phones
than us, but they're still doing the job, and it was only in
America that we found that there was a job that they
    couldn't do.

    BFN. Paul.

Don't be too embarrassed, I've only just relinquished my trusty old Nokia
3210 for a 3315 acquired 2nd hand from Crime Converters. All I want from a
phone is that it can make and receive phone calls!

The 5110 was before the 3210

The screens did die, primarily caused by the contacts between the two
boards wearing out. One goes out of alignment, and it's a major PITA to
get it back in again without breaking them due to them being so small
and fiddly. On the other hand similar phones of the same vintage such as
the Ericsson A1018s had a single board design (with the screen
attached), however the stock software was buggier than a hot night in
    Darwin.
