How's the N95 8GB going? Noticed any bugs/quirks/annoyances now that
you've had it for a while?

I'm thinking of getting one, but can't decide whether to go for the
standard model or the 8GB model.

    Close to perfect.

    > Noticed any bugs/quirks/annoyances now that you've had it for a while?

One very minor quirk is that the dialed list is very ergonomically done,
but doesnt always list the items using the name you have given it,
when the same number appears on more than one contact item.

While that is understandable, I'd prefer to see one of the candidate hits
than the number itself and would be quite happy to see the first one.
I'd like to be able to be able to control that behaviour in the preferences.

Thats a nuisance because I almost never type numbers at all,
so only my home landline number sticks in my head. I cant
even remember any of the mobile numbers or the voip DiD.

Just fixed another quirk when composing this reply. I dump the lists
into the phone using bluetooth and it isnt possible to view the list
and use the usual 2 key keypad lock when viewing one of the lists,
because it uses the 2 keys that are dynamic in the sense that the
use of those 2 keys varys with the app you are using etc. The trick is
to lock the keypay by sliding the slide open and back, very convenient.
I use those lists for stuff like the shopping list in the supermarket, so
need to be able to have the list on the screen and have the keypad locked
so I can drop it in my pocket a few times round the supermarket etc.

Works very well indeed as a voip handset.

One very minor quirk with voip is that I cant find anyone who does
better than 25c calls to 13x numbers and that is an irritation given that
normal numbers only cost me 10c. Havent looked that hard yet tho.

    > I'm thinking of getting one, but can't decide whether
    > to go for the standard model or the 8GB model.

I'd still go for the 8GB, but it is significantly more expensive.

I decided not to go for the NextG model, mainly because you cant
currently get an 8GB NextG model, and I decided that I was unlikely
to need the better coverage that NextG has, with Optarse 3G coming.
But that does mean I cant use it with NextG datapacs on prepaid etc.

Have you noticed any "slowness" on your 8GB model? I've read some reviews
of the standard N95 which have reported things like: "Expect about three
seconds of shutter lag before each shot", and "Everything Is Slow. Slow to
open the funky animated menu, slow to access contacts, slow to access the
    Internet".

I'm leaning towards that... but it's an irritation that it has no card
slot. The N95 can be expanded to 8GB using MicroSD cards (or even 16GB),
yet with the 8GB you're stuck with 8GB -- although that should be more
than enough, I suppose, for the life of the phone.

Three's page for the standard N95 lists its UMTS bands as 850/1900/2100.

NextG runs on 850, so it seems that 3's handset would work fine with a
NextG USIM. If so, what was the point of the N95-3 NextG model? Is 3's
site bull****ting me, or have I missed something basic?

    Nope, nothing like that.

Thats just the usual autofocus stuff.

Pure drivel. And I imported the PC's .wab, so it aint small.

Dont get that either, tho I dont do it via the GSM, stupid ripoff prices.

And its clearly just keeping the number, not the entry in
the contacts that was used to make the call. Thats not
ideal. Tho it does make sense for incoming calls etc.

Yeah, could be a nuisance sometimes.

I've given up on trying to predict that stuff. The last time around,
things came unstuck very quickly with recorded digital TV which
is 2-3GB per hour per channel, and thats SD, not HD.

I sometimes record 50G per evening and it would be handy to be able
to watch some of that on the N95, particularly the stuff like LateLine
Business etc which you dont 'watch' much, mostly just listen to.

In theory I'd rather use what I record at much higher quality
than the grossly inferior alternative they have on their web
site, but in practice I doubt I'd actually bother much.

I do watch that stuff on the laptop some of the time, live on the wifi
from the PVR rather than copying it across to the laptop, mostly just
when bottling the beer. The hour or so to bottle a batch is a bit
boring so its convenient to watch recorded stuff while doing that.

I doubt I'd bother to load that sort of thing into the N95 for use in the
car etc, tho I might on a trip etc. I dont use radio or music at all, ever.

More practical on the laptop than the N95 tho, the screen is a bit small.

Thats not enough for NextG. That version is coming but isnt here
yet and likely it wont be the one 3 is going to ever offer anyway,
so its a bit academic if you want to get it from them on contract.

The other consideration that I basically closed my eyes to is that
it might make more sense to have a NextG capable model in case
telstra does offer something very attractive data wise, but telstra
doesnt do that very often at all, and when it does there's a massive
gotcha involved, so I decided not to wait and be cautious on that.

BTW if you want to sync your N95 to
Google Calendars, nice piece of software at

Yeah, I actually stumbled across that myself about a week ago. I
believe it works with most S60 handsets.

Are you on NextG or GSM? If so the 8 gig model is not a NextG phone which
is a pity as that is what the missus wants but we want one on NG.

    Neither. I'm with 3. (I realize that's not an option for you -- you're
rural -- or at least "regional" -- IIRC.)

In any case, I think I'm going to go with the N82. I was just told 3 are
releasing it on Monday. I was never too keen on getting a "slide phone".
The N82 is a candybar. (And WTF dreamt up that name, anyway?)

Yeah, the arsehole of victoria, where all the welfare dregs end up, where they kill their kids.

I prefer the slide myself, after some reservations before buying it.

What do you suggest it gets called instead ?

I'm a bit worried that the slide might become looser over time (i.e.,
that a year or so down the track it might start start opening/closing when
    I didn't want it to).

Bar? Non-slide? Rigid? Chocolate Bar? Soap Bar?

What's the relevance of the word "candy"?

Probably to attract the younger crowd. There was an ad on TV recently for
an icecream. In part it said, "it has no boring bits".

I mean to say. Are the kids of today so bored ****less that even icecreams
    have to be "exciting"???

Same for mobile phones too, I s'pose. Need to make them exciting, flashy
in appearance and to give them "sexy" names...
