The missus got her Nokia N95i which is the 8 gig model that Optus sells. So far
    we're bloody impressed with it.

Today I downloaded the Nokia Maps Downloader program, set it up then downloaded
the maps for New York, Pommy Land and Frogsville (Paris itself).

We checked out the search feature by entering in some known addresses in those
    countries. And it found them.

I also took the opportunity to download the Australian maps hoping to get
updates. We then scanned around town. I think that they're probably about 3
years old, if the missing streets and roads around here are of any indication.
We've experienced a lot of growth over the past few years so maybe it takes time
to get all this stuff updated.

What data does Nokia use? Is it Sensis' Whereis data which Tom Tom, Mio and
    others use?

I then made a couple of iPod compatible MP4 videos and copied them to the
handset using the USB data connection. They play OK, too.

Camera quality and video quality is good too.

And Optus' 2100Mhz 3G service was switched on yesterday. Did a bit of browsing
to test it. Usual crap with web pages designed for PC screens being displayed a
bit jumbled on the N95. Speed seems to be OK. I also connected it to the
wireless access point on my LAN. That works OK, too. Trying to work out how to
access network resources on the phone without much luck. ie. print a photo, or
load files off a PC's disk drive.

Thing is, my wife can now connect to her email account using either Optus'
network or a wireless hotspot. She can also use the unit as a "hiking" GPS when
exploring London or Paris, or even NY. Only concern is that she doesn't stick
out as a tourist with a sign, "Mug Me" on her head when she's doing this. She'll
need to take care, I think.

One of the gimmicks it has is that it can speak callers' names if they're in the
phone book. I'm not sure what it says when a number that's not in the book
calls, whether it just reads out the number or what.

Yeah, we're happy with it. Glad we went with the 8 gig model, though.

How's this for coincidence? At my niece's 18th on Fri night my wife pulls out
the phone to take a call. My brother notices it. I've got one of them he said.
He picked his up the same day from the same Optus shop as it turned out.

Via what ? If you want to do that using the USB connection,
you just select data mode on the N95 when you plug in the
USB cable and then the N95 appears to the PC as a USB drive.

If you mean via wifi, simplest to run an app in the N95 that makes that more convenient.

Yep, via WiFi. What app could we use?

Speaking of apps where's the best place to download them? Presumably it uses
Java (I haven't checked). My Motorola V9 also uses Java and was thinking of
installing an app that I can enter in fuel/mileage when I fuel up the vehicles
and hopefully export that data into a spreadsheet.

I have something on my PDA but I don't always carry that. But I do with the
    mobile.

It does have the word "Navtech" on the bottom of the maps somewhere. As for more
data I dunno. Lots of streets around my town were missing and some of the
backroads that I've been waiting for a while to see included in the Sensis data
    is also missing.

Main thing is that the New York, London and Paris data is up to date. Which is
should be I would imagine, unless they're going crazy tearing up roads and stuff
    over there.

Depends on whether you mind paying for them or not. If you
dont, the Nokia site has a pretty decent list by phone model.

    > Presumably it uses Java (I haven't checked).

    Its a Symbian phone.

Yep, except that there is a full spreadsheet in the N95, so
you might as well just have the spreadsheet on the phone.

    > I have something on my PDA but I don't always carry that. But I do with the mobile.

Yeah, I have everything in it, including the list of food to buy next time I'm shopping etc.
Just bluetooth the list into the phone before heading out of the house etc.

Any further thoughts now that she (or you) has played with it for a while?

3 is dropping the price of the phone to "free" on its $49 cap tomorrow
(Thu), and I intend finally getting one.

    So far it's a beauty.

Only issue is when in the multimedia menu you try to select a video or music
clip and it spits you back to the main menu. You need to access them using some
other menu. Missus worked it out, but doing the obvious from the main menu
    didn't work. Dunno why, either.

Other than that it's working a treat. She tried a couple of video calls to a
friend, also on Optus 3G 2100 and to our daughter who's with 3. Worked fine to
my V9 on NextG as well.

Love the GPS side of things. Got the Map Loader software and downloaded maps of
NY, London and Paris. Wish it was that easy to do with our Mio Navigator...

Good deal. Optus had the non-8gig model for "free" on its $49 cap plan as well,
but we decided to go with the 8 gig model. It's only $32 a pay and it has a lot
of value on the cap plan.

Wireless connectivity works OK, once I worked out how to configure the security
settings (they were cleverly hidden under "Security Settings" under
    "Networking").

If it was a flip phone and if it allowed me to enter my shift roster on a ten
day recurring pattern then I might've gotten two. But I got the Moto V9 instead.
