How big are the files and how does the N95 go playing them? I reduced GNW using
"Super" for space and thinking that its native size may have been too big for
the small screen.

Very poorly compared with the laptop, essentially because it wont play
dvr-ms files natively and conversion to what it can play takes a long time.
And its most convenient to actually play the files over the wifi rather than
to copy them to the device first, and the N95 doesnt do that natively either.
It does the downloadable files from the program's web site
fine, although it isnt quite as convenient since it doesnt
actually play the file on the fly, it downloads it and then
plays it which isnt quite as convenient time wise.
And not all programs allow the stuff to be downloaded from their web site.

I did download something that someone wanted off utube and
converted it using super using the default settings and that plays fine.

This has been addressed in the latest N95 firmware which now has auto display
switching making use of the N95's accelerometer.

****ing hell... I mean the *standard* model has a monthly handset
repayment of $18. The 8GB model has a monthly repayment of $10.
IOW, the standard model on '3' is $8 per month more expensive on the $29
cap than the 8GB model.
And 3 has now sold out of the N95 8GB, which is just fantastic.

From 3's Terms & Conditions for the N95 8B on the $29 and $39 Caps, the total
24 month cost equates to the handset repayments being $38 per month rather
than the advertised $10. Either there's a printing error with the handset repayments
or in the T&Cs.
Either way, it seems expensive for a 'GPS camera phone'. To fully utilise the
N95 8GB, you'd need to also buy one of 3's data packs. eg. $30/mth for 1GB,
$40/mth for $2GB etc.

Printing error, pray tell? Methinks you mean "typographical error".
It's definitely only an extra $10pm on the $29 and $39 caps.
3's website is riddled with those sorts of errors. It's not at all good
on precise details. (It's even worse than Crazy John's.)

Or $5 for 20MB, $8 for 100MB, or $12 for 200MB.
It's fairly cheap, really. Take, for example the $29 cap with 100MB of
data.
Total cost = $47 per month, which gets you:
A "free" Nokia N95 8GB
$150 worth of voice/video calls
200 minutes of free 3-to-3 calls
Unlimited use of Planet 3 content
100MB of data for browsing, A-GPS, etc.
4,000 minutes of Skype calls
State-of-the-art Indian customer service
And for only $10pm more you could go on the $49 cap instead of the $29.
(Only morons and aus.tv posters would go for this deal on the $39 cap.)

Sounds good for someone who wants a phone. On the other hand, for someone who
wants data, and to use their phone as a modem etc., 100MB is way too small.
So if you upgrade your calculations to $79/month, you'll get:
A "free" Nokia N95 8GB
$150 worth of voice/video calls
200 minutes of free 3-to-3 calls
Unlimited use of Planet 3 content
2GB of data for browsing, downloading, A-GPS, etc.

100MB is fine to "fully utilise the N95 8GB". The only way you're likely
to go over 100MB/200MB is if you use your phone as a modem.
And no-one other than '3' allows you do that without prohibitive costs.
How much would 2GB data cost on Telstra, Optus, or Vodafone?
Cost conscious customers would, in any case, be better off getting 3's
offer of 6GB for $49 with free actual modem (or 1GB for $15 with free
modem).
(Coincidentally, new X-Series pricing is due to be released at the end of
July.)

I mainly use my N95 8GB for SMS, web browsing, data downloads, its WLAN, and
as a modem. On my $79 monthly Vodafone plan, I get 100 free SMSs per month
before the plan kicks in which is more than enough for me. Take a few calls
here and there out of the monthly $550 allowance and I'm left with well over
36 hours of data usage per month. With its HSDPA high speeds, it averages out
to about 12GB of data per month. Not bad with the free phone chucked in.
Fortunately, I signed my contract when the data usage was time based ($1/5min).
I understand all the new Vodafone plans may charge data at 2c/Kb now. Therefore
if I switched over to the new plan I'd get 25MB as opposed to the current 12GB?
Is that right - or am I having a bad maths day?

When I'm out of the house, I connect the N95 to the laptop and use it as a
modem. Some of the regular Vista & HP updates will easily chew through a few
hundred MB. As for 25MB a month, Vodafone must be kidding. I'll stick to my
~12GB on their $79 cap thanks. So have you bought the N95 8GB yet Horry?
