New Zealand's mobile phone duopoly will be brought to an end on Monday when
TelstraClear enters the market.
The move is expected to spark a price war between them and rivals Telecom
and Vodafone.
Steve Jackson, Head of Consumer Markets for Telstra Clear, says the pricing
plans will be simple.
He says the offer is for a $20 a month rental with 500 text messages to any
network, and a flat rate of 29 cents a minute.
As part of the bundle, customers would receive a free Nokia handset.
However, it is only available to customers who also have their landline and
broadband with TelstraClear.
Jackson says only one handset is available to start with, and there's no
broadband data plan yet.
Despite the limitations on that plan, the competition is expected to force
the issue for Telecom and Vodafone, whose plans were labelled too expensive
by international standards in a Commerce Commission report in April.
