I came across an interesting article:
CDMA phones may get network freedom soon- The Economic Times

Basicly in India a large CDMA wireless carrier is presuring Qualcomm to allow phones to have RUIM cards (the equivalent to SIM cards on the GSM network)

The technology is available and already in use in China. It would be great to see progress for RUIM cards in the North American CDMA market.

Re: RUIM cards for CDMA network

I've seen the RUIM discussions about a year ago when I first started working at my old store.

With W-CDMA coming, RUIM cards are already being used, so as the 2 networks (CDMA and GSM) merge together, as we're slowly seeing in Pacific Asia, I think RUIM (SIM) cards will be the norm.

There is no reason why CDMA carrier's can't use the equivilant of SIM cards. It has more to do with hardware subsidy and proprietary rights and such.

I've read that WCDMA is a 3g GSM technology and is not compatible with current CDMA systems. Is Bell looking to switch to WCDMA in the future?

Well, not really, and kind of. W-CDMA is still GSM, but it employs adapted CDMA technology for the data stuff. This symbolized the first merging of the 2 major networks. While we won't see it anytime soon, this was the first step to what will eventually be a complete merging of both networks, somewhere in the middle between the 2 technologies.
