Earlier today I left my normal "stomping grounds" and went a couple states away, and the weirdest thing happened to my phone.

It stopped being able to place, or receive calls. Every time I tried to make a call I got "Call Failure" and then after a while the phone stopped doing anything when it entered the dialing mode, and just went right back to the call log. The interesting thing was that I was still completely able to send and receive text messages.

I have 3-5 bars of service the entire time, and was in fact just outside of New York City (I am not sure if this makes any different .

This problem continued from about 2PM until about 8PM (when I got home and searched online for similar problems). I discovered that quite a few other people have had a similar problem, and the only solution they could discover was to Remove the Battery, and "Reboot" the phone.

SOOOOoooo basically I have 2 questions:

    1. Is there a way to prevent this from happening again?

    and

    2. If I can't prevent it from happening again, is there an easier way of "rebooting" the phone than removing the battery?? I tried using the power button to turn it off multiple times, and that did not have any affect on the problem.

You can do a soft reset by holding down ALT+rt SHIFT+DEL
(ALT key, the right SHIFT and the DEL key). This will reboot the phone.

Which cell provider are you using?
How much free memory do you have?
Do you normally close any apps you have open, or do you use ESC to get out of them?
While you were out of your normal call area, did the phone always show your cell provider, or did it show others or roaming?

The Curves seem to start acting up when they have less that 12 megs of memory to work with. So deleting any apps you don't need or use, will help a lot with this. Apps that save data to the device memory, this includes call and message logs, cache files, pictures, themes, all can effect free memory.

BTW, what removing the batter does, is one, removes any apps in memory that have caused the working memory to go too low, especially apps that have not been exited properly, or exited at all. I have a friend who once she found out that all she had to do was close her apps, and delete her phone logs at least once a month, stopped having her BB lag and show the hour glass all the time.

Re: Blackberry 8330 how to reboot + "call failure"

I am using AT&T and the whole time, the phone displayed the carrier/provider.

I had a bunch of Free Memory, because earlier in the week I had "lost" the ability to have a call list, and the phone was lagging (this was apparently because when I switched phones, the "tech" who transferred the data; transferred it to the "Device Memory" instead of the Memory stick).... so after moving a bunch of pictures from the device memory to the memory stick the phone started behaving again.... that is until 4-6 days later when it decided to stop making/receiving phone calls.................. So I HAD been having/getting the hour glass displayed a lot, until I freed up a bunch of device memory.. but like I said, this took place DAYS before the main problem I was .. idk.. trying to address in this thread.

As far as how I exit applications, I usually either back out, or press the power button to get out. I am unaware of another method for exiting/CLOSING and application.

When closing apps, hit the menu button and scroll down to close, this will take the apps out of memory. If you just hit ESC or the Power button they well be running in the background, taking up memory. Once memory gets down to under 12megs, the Curves can start to lag, and do things like reboot in the middle of calls, and showing the hour glass more then it should normally.

Run the memory cleaner, and keep you phone logs, sms archives and browser cache paired down as much as possible.
