Curve 8900 without data plan?

I want to get a blackberry, however, i dont need the constant access to email. i want the full qwerty keyboard and wifi. All of the carriers are now requiring an additional data plan or blackberry plan, $20+ per month. Is there anyway to avoid this fee?

No. Like you said, all carrier's require a data plan for all their smart phones. Sorry.

You can buy a Blackberry 8900 without a data plan from craigslist or ebay. The carrier may not sell it to you without a data package.

Your phone will function normally like a regular phone for voice & text messages only. and if you connect to the wifi, you can use the web browser.. however, everything else like blackberry messenger, email, other applications, facebook, msn... those go through the RIM servers and will not work unless you subscribe to a data plan. (yes, even when on wifi)

so the blackberry messenger thing that u have to have a pin for thats through RIM and isn't built into the phone?

You can only get Blackberry Messenger on a Blackberry Device! And you need to subscribe to a Blackberry Data Plan..
