I just received an unlocked Blackberry Storm 9530 phone that I purchased on Ebay. After charging I placed my existing sim card in it and it tells me the phone must be activated. If the phone is unlocked does it still need to be activated by a carrier?

I do no tknow anything aobut cell phones so your help is appreciated.

No my friend, if it's unlock all you have to de is insert your SIM Card and that's it. You should check if it's a tri band or quad band, and also check what kind of band does your network run, maybe this could be an issue. Good luck.

Which carrier are you with? And are you trying to use the Blackberry features or just use it as a phone?

    Re: unlocked phone

Thanks for helping me out as I am in new territory with this type of phone. I took the SIM card from my unlocked Z6C and placed it inot the new Blackberry 9530.

When I turn on the phone I see activation reguired. I cannot make a call with my sim card in the new phone.

Since this was purchased off of Ebay how can I verify that the phone is unlocked?

Thanks, I wish I could buy all of you a Coke for your help.

Will an unlocked Verizon Storm work with T-Moblie? I'm looking to get one for a friend as a present. Thanks

Yes, but only on 2G/EDGE, not 3G.

This is a copy / paste from another site, I hope it works:

How do I determine if my BlackBerry is "unlocked" ?
    Quote:
To determine if your BlackBerry is "unlocked" for use on carriers other than for which it is branded:

    A. On your BlackBerry, go to Options > Advanced Options > Sim Card.
    B. At that screen type MEPD (see note below) on your keyboard. A new menu will pop up.
If your BlackBerry has a SureType keyboard (71xx and 81xx devices) you will need to double-tap the P, so the actual keys entered become M E P P D.
    C. Look for Network in the list.
    D. If your device is "unlocked", it should say Disabled or Inactive. If it says Active, it's still locked to that carrier

Dude, I'm not sure if you can use a CDMA (Verizon) with a GSM (T-Mobile), maybe you can use the internet service, but I don't think you are going to be able to use it as a phone, T-mobile needs a SIM Card to make the phone calls, Verizon doesn't.

Remember, the Storm is a multi-network device. It supports GSM (quad-band), CDMA (850MHz/1900MHz), and HSDPA (2100MHz).
