    Re: storm

It is a nice phone. But if your used to texting a lot this phone will throw a wrench into that. I tried to use it for almost three weeks, and while I did get pretty good with it, two keys made me switch over to the Curve (which isn't the best either, keyboard is to small). The "A" Key and especially the "B" Key just got on my nerve so much that I switched phones.

And now they have the Storm 2 coming out towards the end of the year. Yes, there is going to be improvments to the original, and I have no idea if Storm 1 users are going to be able to download the improvments to their phone.

Besides that, it is a pretty nice phone. The screen is amazing.

Re: should I get a storm

My wife and i have had the storm for about 3 weeks. The texting is def an issue as the screen is not as responsive as a phone with a keyboard.

However, myself i love having rss feeds (viigo) and a geocaching program (geocache navigator).

I also like that there are more options for mapping instead of vz navigator.
Another nice feature is the fact it is a global phone (has included sim for outside of verizon). Also , i personally love the way it gets email and notifies me. I had an lg env and lg voyager. They would both crash trying to use mobile email.

Overall, if you dont mind slower texting or dont text at all , it's a great phone.

If you like heavy, clunky phones, go ahead and get one. I have a few friends that had the Storm and they both took them back before the 30 grace period.

The iPhone is much better, the web browser is much better and the iPhone can display 256k colors compared to 64k on the Storm, and the iPhone interface is better where the storm, while looking iPhone-ish, is just the same older clunkier menu driven blackberry underneath.

it really depends on why your looking into getting the storm. I have switched from a curve to the storm and love it. If you are in need of smart phone and not a fast texter, then the storm is awesome. Indeed to get used to the touch screen to text does take time and practice. The emailing on Blackberry is above any other brand I have had at this time, Yes I know the Iphone is slimmer and has great features, however I can't stand AT&T so unless Verizon can get the Iphone in 2010 I will be a Blackberry Storm user.

Verizon will not get the iPhone until at least the end of 2010 when the contract with AT&T ends. The storm was a sad attempt at making a phone to compete with the iPhone as the iPhone out paces the storm in nearly every area. For starters, the storm is slower and clunkier without graphics acceleration, and the web browser, based on previous Blackberry products leaves much to be desired. Email is stripped of all tabs, spaces and such, and leaves much to be desired when displaying emails, and you have to manually click through menus to get images to display in emails. Images are downsampled on the Storm where they're not on the iPhone. The storm can only display 64k colors, where the iPhone can display 256k colors, which makes a big difference when viewing photographs. While the Storm appears iPhone-ish on the outside, after clicking a button on the home screen, you're into the same menu driven style OS that most other cell phones have been using for years. That in and of itself is the main drawback, which is software based. The iPhone defined a completely new interface for operating a smart phone, which is where it really makes it such an amazing phone. All Blackberry seems to have done is drop in an accelerometer, and an iPhone-like looking home screen and thinks that can compete with an iPhone. I feel RIM has completely dropped the ball with the Storm, and while it's clickable screen is an original idea, I don't think it's particularly innovative. Aside from a removable battery, I personally can't find any area where the Storm outpaces the iPhone. You'd think with 2 years development time that the Storm would have been more able to compete with the iPhone, but it's a dismal failure. I know it's selling well right now, but overall, I think that Storm owners will be disappointed once they get a chance to operate an iPhone, and see the differences, not only hardware, but in the amazing OS Apple has developed for the iPhone.

Some other issues: The Storm's youtube experience sucks big time, compared to viewing youtube on a Touch. I've never seen youtube on an iphone, so can't compare, but I was sorely disappointed in the lousy quality of videos served up by the VZN EVDO-A service, on the Storm. No settings will make the videos smooth and sharp like on a Touch on wifi. I'm talking professionally shot video like music videos--not silly home grown videos.

Also, the sound quality of Pandora is abysmal on the Storm, due to Pandora's use of a "low bandwidth solution", as told to me by a pandora employee. I noticed right away that Pandora sounds nothing like it does on a wifi connection. That's two functions I was hoping would work well on the Storm.

The constant reboots, inability to switch to speakerphone mode if I answered the phone with the screen in landscape mode, all conspired to sour me on the storm.

The Storm lacks a proximity sensor, making it a pain to use up against your ear.

The hardware is pretty decent, however. Movies look better on the Storm than my Touch--more saturated color and much better black levels. Speaker phone quality excellent, as is call quality.

The OS is so kludgy however, it nullifies the nice hardware. Try counting how many button presses it takes to close down the media app, when viewing a movie! About 6, IIRC. RIM should go back to the drawing board and start from scratch.

While multi tasking is nice,it would be far nicer if there was an obvious and easy way to monitor/close apps.

I fully expect the Storm 2 to suffer many issues too. RIM's been messing around with many updates and still have issues with memory leaks. I don't think they are up to the task of fixing the OS once and for all.

Now as to the iPhone...non replaceable battery bites big time! Lack of multi-tasking leaves them vulnerable to other touch screen phones such as the Pre to steal their thunder. Being top dog is great...while it lasts.

Youtube over 3G is a bit grainy, but with a WI-FI connection I noticed a particular video, one that's higher res to begin with, was coming in SUPER CLEAR. So, a bit of a split. Generally grainy over 3G, but quite capable of extremely high resolution video, iPod movies as well display way better than a Storm possibly could. Remember, 65536 colors on a Storm vs. 262,144 on an iPhone (@ 480x320 163 pixels per inch.) I can totally rock.

The sound is so so via the iPhone speaker, but head phones or any amplified speaker system sounds great as you'd expect.

That helps conserve battery power (since you don't need the display or input capabilities when the phone is against your head). It's the little things like that that make the iPhone stand out over the Storm, along with just about everything else.

Right, it's like it's a standard smartphone (or even regular cell phone) that's got a sort of iPhone-ish shell around the same old same old clunky OS that Apple set out to overcome. It's not a step backwards, but it's not a step forward like the iPhone is.

Agreed. A replaceable battery would be a nice feature to see on the next iPhone due out soon. I sort of doubt it, but then again, even though it voids the warrantee, it is possible to self-replace an iPhone or iPhone 3G battery. Kits run $25 to $30 bucks, which include a new battery, replacement instructions, and a tool to assist in opening the iPhone's case. Also, pretty detailed videos exist walking one through a battery replacement. Kissing your phone goodbye for 10 days, and $100 bucks goodbye forever isn't exactly appealing to anyone.

Also, hopefully some multi-tasking capabilities are on their way as one of the "100 new features" in the 3.0 update. Considering Apple's considerable lead, I'd suppose the could coast a bit while they catch their breath, and figure out what move to make next and still keep up with the competition, but ultimately, if someone else out there wakes up and gets smart, then Apple might have a reason to sweat.

Personally, I dislike the Storm. Being the first touch screen for Blackberry, there was a lot of problems.. for me that was. It was too slow for me.

Re: should I get a storm

The storm has alot of issues. For starters, on the hardware side, it's very slow and clunky and has no 3D hardware like an iPhone. On the software side, if you're a blackberry fan, you'll dislike it, because it's basically a standard blackberry OS 'wrapped' with an iPhone like interface. So, on the surface, it seems to be like an iPhone, but, after a click or two, you're into the same menu structure of a Blackberry, which misses the entire point. The iPhone interface is what makes the phone. So, if you like the iPhone, you'll dislike the Storm, and if you're a Blackberry fan, you'll dislike the phone as well. It's a very sad attempt at competition for an iPhone. Also, the web browser and email are horribly slow, and the one 'innovative' thing, the 'clickable' screen is not much of an innovation at all. Don't trust me, hunt the web and read the reviews. On top of all of that, the iPhone 3G has dropped in price to $99 with a two year agreement, and the 3Gs 8 gig is $199. So, you can get a better phone for half the price, or an even better phone for the same price. Go with the iPhone, specifically the 3Gs, you'll not be sorry.

It is, a friend has one and it's very slow. Simple lists are choppy when you're scrolling through, and the physics programming is silly. An iPhone scrolls smooth as glass, and continues to scroll after your finger has left the screen. "Friction" brings it to a halt so that it doesn't scroll forever, but with the storm, as soon as your finger leaves the screen, it stops scrolling, and when it is scrolling it's very VERY choppy. There's no 3D hardware, so there's no 3D games either, all of them are silly, simplistic 2D games, and at that, are quite bad. I had better games on my 386 40 mhz pc 20 years ago. Where the iPhone rivals any dedicated hand held system (PSP, Nintendo, etc).

The biggest issue though is that the Storm is simply the same old same old Blackberry OS with an "iPhone-ish" shell around it. So, if you're a Blackberry fan, you'll dislike it, and if you're an iPhone fan, you'll dislike it. They complete dropped the ball in that department. More than anything that the iPhone offers, the completely re-thought out user interface on the iPhone is it's best feature. Navigation is quick, smooth, easy and intuitive, while the Storm is slow, choppy, and into the same old menu system style OS that ALL smartphones have had since their inception. Personally, I don't know how Apple does it. The interface itself sells the phone, yet the hardware and price beat the Storm hands down, and the Storm could be a better phone despite it's hardware limitations if it was programmed better, and more closely copied the iPhone's interface style, but the poor programming and lack of following through with the new style of interface is completely where the Storm looses out.

The iPhone interface is SO advanced that you're going to see desktop PC's following suit in the near future. You can see it already in the latest version of Safari from Apple, which features cover-flow style browsing though bookmarks.
