In the wake of launch of iPhone 4g and the recently revealed Droid X both Apple and Google are battling out the Research in Motions’s (RIM’S) smartphone crown, as the companies bring significant upgrades to their newest devices (Babcock, 2010). Both Apple and Google are bringing new innovative technology to their devices at a rapid pace but which one has the advantage over the other?

With the launch of the iPhone 4g, Apple brought to the table some amazing new advances in their technology. Lest look at the display to start. “The iPhone 4 will also sport what Jobs described as a “retina display” with four times the pixel density of a typical LCD display at a whopping 326 pixels per inch—by far denser than anything else in the consumer electronics market. The result is a 3.5-inch display with a native resolution of 960 by 640 pixels that is actually a higher resolution than the typical human eye is capable of perceiving, when held at a distance of just 10 to 12 inches” (Digital Trends Staff , 2010). The new iPhone 4 is boasting other impressive specs, including a front-facing camera, high-definition 720p video recording capability, 5-megapixel rear-facing camera, longer battery life and a three-axis gyroscope (Paul, 2010).

The latest Android phone, the Droid X by Verizon is equally impressive if not better. The phone comes with a 1GHz processor, 8-megapixle rear camera, android 2.1 with possible upgrade to 2.2, a 4.3-inch, FWVGA 854 x 480-resolution screen, 720p recording capability and a HDMI output port. According to the reviews presented by engadget, the performance of the Droid X is highly noteworthy. “Performance: Snappy! That's exactly what the Droid X is. The entire phone and transitions were super fast and responsive, keyboards popped up with virtually no lag and it tracks finger swiping more accurately than most Android phones we've seen -- it undoubtedly has its 1GHz ARMv7 processor (presumably an OMAP3630) to thank for that. If the specs on the model we saw are correct, the phone will come with 8GB of storage space. Obviously, we didn't have enough time to test battery life, but there was some sort of special battery management software on the phone” (Stern, 2010).

As far as sales goes, Apple out performs android by controlling 28% of the smartphone market as appose to Google’s 9%. Apple currently has 30 million subscribers and is expected to have 100 million by 2011. It does help to note that the iPhone was launch a year earlier than Android and currently they have both been growing sales at the same pace of 2% each year.

In conclusion: It isn’t the specs that going to determine the winner of this battle. The deciding factor will be based on who has the best apps to appease the public. Both phones are all about generating cool apps that generates excitement and fun. It appears that Apple will be focusing on playing videogames on their phone. SquareEnix launched two of my old time Super Nintendo games exclusive for the iPhone, Secrete of Mana and FinalFantacy Tactics. Android, however, Is capable of producing numerous, useless but fun gadgets with their massive and mostly free app world including a bar code scanner, advanced task killer, flash light, the coupons app, metal detector, star map, banking, shopping, social networking and thousands others I can’t even think of. In all, Android may be a little bit more interesting than Apple.

Update 8/25/2010

As the battle continues Samsung has launched a series of highly popular phones across all major US carriers and some europian and asian companies a few months ago. The Galaxy S smart phone was a big success for samsung and Google Android. Samsung is bringing out the Galaxy Tab with a 7" screen and Android 2.2 OS preinstalled. As for Apple, there are rumors that they will spread to other carriers but no solid evidance so far. Its my opinion that Apple will spread to verizon and posible T-mobile as well.
