Hi i own a VW Polo and ive been trying to set up my head unit but have been having problems with it. The head unit does not save any of the settings i put into it? I have been told that the red wire should go into the yellow and yellow into red but when i do this the head unit does not even turn on and the only wiring that works is the one which loses the settings. Any ideas?

Firstly, what head unit do you own? Need to know before we can even start to discuss this.

Nice HU man.
Firstly, what have you got wired to where?
I can tell you what the wires are by colour but only on the hu’s loom, not on your car’s.

Speaker Outputs:
White = Front Left + (Positive)
White+Stripe = Front Left – (Negative)
Green = Rear Left +
Green+Stripe = Rear Left –
Grey = Front Right +
Grey+Stripe = Front Right –
Purple = Rear Right +
Purple+Stripe = Rear Right –
Power Source:
Yellow = B+
Black = Earth
Red = Switch
Accessories:
Orange = Illumination
Blue = Pwr Antenna
I think that’s the lot. If there’s others let me know and I’ll sort things out.

Now, make sure you have your battery disconnected before attempting any of this lol. (just the - is ok.)
Make sure you have the yellow wire connected to the + as it is your main 12v supply. (if unsure where to connect it to, just run a wire straight to the + terminal on your battery)
Next, wire the red wire up to your ignition switch so the hu turns on with the acc setting.
Now run the black wire to an earth point. Any black wire around the cars stereo loom will do.(or just find a screw or bolt which is securely threaded into a solid body of un-painted metal)
Now fire it up and see what happens, try save some settings then turn off and on the ignition switch and see if they are lost. If so, your HU is faulty or most likely your ingition wiring (from the hu) is incorrect.
The only other parts to do are wiring the speakers which is pretty straight forward, and the illumination wire, which is probably best run to the headlight switch on your car and set for the parkers.
See how ya go.

Thanks for that, i will give it a try soon, im just a lil busy with exams atm so im gonna get them out the way first. I know i wont b needing to move any of the other wires except the power and the ignition lead. So im gonna play around with it, but im also gonna try a multimeter on the wire first just to check there is power. I will let you know how it goes, thanks for the help

No probs man... Good luck with ya exams.
One more thing to add; if none of this works, re-check your speaker wiring for faults, shorts, or impropper earthing. This has happened to me a few times with my hu and as teh hu detects a fault in the wires it shuts off all power (including the constant supply - therefore leading to your memory loss.)
