Any of the big name brands are about the same (Panasonic makes them all ). For subs and amps I would stake my life on JL Audio.

Those are all great suggestions but combined as a full system they would be well out of the $600 range. For the deck I would go with a mid level Sony, Alpine or Kenwood around $200, next would be a 150-200watt Lightening Audio amp (manufactured by Rockford fosgate but sells for half the price) provides excellent bang for the buck. Finally with what money is left find a decent pair of 10 or 12 inch subs that best suit your car. For a hatch back go with a ported isobaric enclosure, for a coupe go with a sealed solobaric enclosure.

Do not compare something like Lightning Audio [whatever it is] to EMachines.

Good recommendation and way to go, i think that might be going over the $600 if you want something to sound somehow decent, lets not forget your front and back stage speakers, if anything don't go cheap on all your speakers and amps, the head unit you can compromise...good luck.
