To enlighten you... all you need to know is this about Mercedes... it's made in Germany... ever travelled to Germany? I have and I know that the Germans are known for their strong work ethic, they are very precise and careful, they work hard and they are very conservative people...
The Germans aren't concerned in the least about silly prestige or status symbols... that's reserved for folks concerned about meaningless, trivial issues like you!
Perhaps it would help if you actually provided pics to the exact year and model of cars I mentioned hmnnn...?
http://www.fast-autos.net/bmw/bmw.html
http://autos.yahoo.com/newcars/merce...5vrqXJAxx3eL8F
The Mercedes is rated at 476 horsepower not 469
http://autos.yahoo.com/newcars/merce...uzOKwOavYP8cIF
(and just look at the rpm's that are needed for your Beamer to reach that amount btw... )
The Mercedes E55 has 516 pound feet at a reasonably accessible 2650 rpms compared to the M5's pansy-ish 384 pound feet and I believe an astounding ummm 6100 rpms.
Further comparisons... you mentioned the balanced 50/50 weight distribution right? ... well that's not quite accurate yet again... the M5 is 51/49 close but... then so is the E55 at 53/47... minimal difference that 99.9% of the time will never arise in day to day driving.
Well here's the difference between the M5 and the E55... *drum roll please...* *whispers* 50 pounds.
by an extra $80, the E55 has better gas mileage, a smaller wheelbase, better cornering, is easier to handle in the straight-aways... it's close but... in the end the E55 has the BMW equivalent beat overall.
...and if you actually knew the first thing about performance cars or design (which I'm an expert on btw... I consult auto manufacturers on how to design and build cars, write and develop the software they use in designing cars and I'm the owner and CEO of the company I founded that provides this service, which is one of a dozen or so currently but growing at an exponential rate I might add... my previous profession before I became an entreprenuer/investor trained me to drive in such a manner as to actually utilize all this performance you seem so concerned about... I quite frankly don't see the importance to drive like that unless you were working for a law enforcement agency or a race car driver or similar... and I know for certain you aren't the former. ) you would know that you can't compare two cars that are nearly identical... the auto companies are putting up these two cars as all competetive auto companies do like you would two opposing members on a sports team... understand? These cars are meant to compete for sales in a specific market... in other words... they are nearly identical. That's the way it works... first it was the E55 then BMW created the M5 to compete in that spectrum of the market. They each have their seperate identities and philosophies but essentially on paper... they are identical twins. I'm not a fan... I do know PLENTY more than you do and the majority of everyone else regarding performance and I don't ever run away from anything. The only reason I just posted up pics is that first of all, I didn't want to get into a senseless argument with someone who was biased in their closed minded opinions (hint: don't post a poll if you don't want to hear someone's view other than your own) secondly; you have little to no knowledge about the subject and your "facts" are intentionally skewed in favour of your opinion. Anyway, my advice to you... if you don't want to hear another's opinion that differs from your own... don't ask for it! I have no more to add to this thread but I'm not "running away" as you say kiddo'. Hmnnn... looks like the poll is 50/50.
Did I mention that the M5 has the SMG-II gearbox, with hydroelectric clutch? While the Benz is only availible with an automatic?
EDIT: Found another factual error.
first it was the E55 then BMW created the M5 to compete in that spectrum of the market
The first E55 was created in '00. The first M5 was created way back in 1987. Wow.. mercedes copies too.
your "facts" are intentionally skewed in favour of your opinion.
Btw.. your facts are intentionally skewed in favor of you opinion. Oh yea, they're not actually skewed.. they're just BS

Oh.. and to the rest of the people.. here's another reason to go for BMW. The sport sedan class around here is dominated by BMW and it's 3 series. Here's a little "comparison" between the Benz and the BMW.
Benz has the C320 "sport" sedan
V6, 215 Horsepower
3430 lbs weight
19/26 Fuel economy
BMW 330i
I6, 225 Horsepower
3285 lbs weight
21/30 Fuel economy
Oh yes.. and the C320 has very poor throttle response compared to the BMW. I've driven one myself.. feels more like my camaro
But you know what? The BMW I put up here is soon the be replaced by the new 330i. It's already been released in Europe, and in 3 months, it'll be on US shores. How about the specs of it?
BMW 330i
I6, 258 Horsepower
Lighter weight (With BMW's new engine technology, the engine is 30% lighter)
Fuel Economy.. BMW hasn't released it yet, but Car and Driver say it's been improved.
0-60 mph: 5.6 seconds
1/4 mile: 14.3 seconds
Benz C320
V6 215 Horsepower
3430 lbs weight
19/26 Fuel economy
0-60 mph: 6.9 seconds
1/4 mile: 15.1 seconds
And.. the Benz loses big time on handling, considering the BMW has perfect weight balance. One of the traits of BMW's.
Are any of you aware of the prestige BMW engine's carry? How about Mercedes?
Well.. Mclaren chose BMW to engineer the engine for the magnificent Mclaren F1 capable of 241 mph. And, Ascari, with their KZ1, chose BMW to make their engine.
Mercedes on the other hand....... Well; Chrysler uses their engine in the Crossfire. But what has more prestige, Mclaren and Ascari? Or Chrysler? Not to mention, Mercedes had to buy from Mclaren for their SLR (which still sucks), while Mclaren bought from BMW.
Need more proof? Here are a few more examples..
BMW 530i vs. Benz E320
BMW 545i vs Benz E500 (AHAHAHAHAHA!! )
BMW M3 vs Benz C55 AMG

Come on G....*waits for G to come online*
But i prefer beamers to mercs, but thats because im just 18
But my dad had a merc a while back (E320) and it was always in being repaired, The Rollcage was always goin on it, id say he spent more repairing it than he did to buy it in the first place, so he got rid of it,eating at his pockets,It was a nice car though, really comfortable to be in!Last edited by Mark; 04-09-2005 at 02:20 PM.

.... Oh Jennie... what a riot!!
I think the right thing to do is continue to argue the merits of the automobiles and cease arguing the opinins of one anothers' perceived mental deficiencies...
and HEY!! No going back and editing/deleting posts... ... I'm officially taking bets on how long this thread lasts boys and girls
....And for the record...? If any of y'all wanna deliver a Benz and a Beamer to my driveway I'll be glad to have an opinion of my own... it'll probably all be based on ease-of-carseat-installation !!
