Re: Asurion cell phone insurance review!

Totally agree with the original post from 01-20-2006! Terrible service and false “promises”. And note: today is October 2010 – more than 4 years and nothing changed except:

    1. Now it’s 5.99 a month

    2. Now it’s $90 deduction

    3. Now they ask you to go online ... and it is impossible to complete claim online (at least on "lost or stolen" phone) – web asks you to call the customer service to finalize the claim (and automatic phone service asks you to go online for “fast and easy service”…)

    4. to submit a claim for lost or stolen phone you need to provide police report#, police officer name, officer badge# and more.. Didn’t you know about this? Nobody mentioned this when offered insurance? Surprise?... And something else… – when we went to our local Police Department we were told they don’t accept reports on lost or stolen phones anymore!! Another surprise?!...

In other words it took us about 4 weeks to submit claim vs. those “10 minutes” advertised by Asurion.

And this is not all … The original sell phone we had was released in 2009 (12 months ago) – Asurion didn’t have this model. Do you think they offered a brand new model which just came out?! Forget it – they offered 4-year old the most unpopular model of that type of cell phones and asked to pay $90 deduction. We didn't want that model and asked if the model is not available then could we get any simplest phone as a replacement, like.. no messaging, no web, nothing just phone? – Yes, - they said – but you still have to pay $90 deduction!! We tried to argue – why $90? We can get a brand new smartphone with touch screen just for $74 (with 2-years plan) from Service Provider and get another smartphone for free!!!
And do you know what they said?... The answer was: - We understand, but you have to decide for yourself what is better for your wallet…”

    And this is “insurance”? Unbelievable....
Like the author of the original post – “I thought insurance was supposed to help your wallet”……
    Good luck.

Re: Asurion cell phone insurance review!

OMG, please do NOT use Asurion!!!!Its not worth a penny!!!!I have T-mobile Samsung Vibrant and just because i don't have 2-year contract i had to pay full price for that new phone,so i decided to get insurance in case something happens to it because i still got payments every month.i never in my life had insurance for my other phones and everything was fine!!!but now when i got it i dropped my phone and the screen cracked. so i decided not a big deal, i got insurance.Oh no,that was a big mistake!!!i filed a claim on Monday.they promised that my new phone will be delivered next day and i had to pay $130. next day phone never came.i called them and they said that it was Columbus Day, thats why they shipped it on Tuesday.i thought ok.Wednesday i never got my phone.Again i called them and rep told me that they made some changes to my order thats why its gonna be regular delivery instead of overnight...what kind of BS is that?one day you saying one thing and the next day its something else?!and on top of it she hang up on me so i had to call them back!!!anyway i decided to wait for another day.Friday i'm calling them again.and again they couldn't tell me anything cuz they didnt have any information,no tracking number,no delivery date, absolutely nothing!!!they told me to wait till Monday.that's when i got really pissed!!!! their customer service is terrible, complete lack of professionalism!!! and now it's already October18th.its been 8 days since i filed my claim and i'm still waiting....i dnt know how much longer i have to wait but they just told me that im gonna get my phone in 2-3 days.exactly the same thing they told me last week.i mean seriously, do they think that we,customers, are stupid or what?if i get lucky and finally get my new phone im gonna cancel this insurance.why would i pay $5.99/month to go through all that???i'd rather go buy new phone or fix it if i brake it.it seems like im spending the same money anyway plus all this headache!!!!Guys, please think about it before buying this insurance.im sure there were maybe couple lucky people who had good experience with them but mostly i see it's disappointed customers who can't really do anything about it...

Re: Asurion cell phone insurance review!

My kid just upgraded to a "smart" phone. After having it for less than a week, she let one of her friends at school use it to make a call. The friend dropped it, the screen cracked and went dark. The phone still receives calls, but can't make calls.

I guess it's a "Schedule B" device, which means our deductible is $89. Filled out the online form, printed the additional claim form, faxed it with my ID.

Now they tell me that this phone is "out of stock" and must be back-ordered. I ask to speak to a manager. Give me some other comparable phone, and send it today, I say. The manager lies and says they have no comparable phones. Come on, it's just a phone with a battery, a camera, a touch screen, and a keyboard. You have a warehouse FULL of comparable phones, or you're committing fraud by claiming next-day shipping.

Sorry, sir, all I can do is go by what the system tells me, and it's telling me that your phone is unique in all the universe. Our average back-order is 3-7 days, but your agreement, section F, paragraph 1, says we can take up to 30 days to replace your phone, and there's not a damn thing you can do about it.

But wait, claims manager, section F paragraph 2 says you may provide substitute equipment. What phones DO you have in stock, and I'll decide which are "comparable"? No can do, sucker, I mean, sir.

So basically we're just without a phone until they backorder it and it arrives and they turn around and ship it. But maybe there's something I can do about it.

I'll go to the store and downgrade my kid to the phone they had before, so at least we'll have some kind of service while we're waiting up to 30 days for the replacement. I've read the insurance terms and conditions, and it doesn't say I can't use the phone they're replacing to crack walnuts while I'm waiting for the replacement to arrive. Sure, I'll ship it back in the postage-paid envelope, to avoid the $300 Salvage Non-Return fee. If I'd received the replacement in a day, like your brochure promises, it would have come back with just a cracked screen. Don't know what kind of condition it may be in by the time the replacement arrives, but I guess that's why we have insurance, eh?

Re: Asurion cell phone insurance review!

I'm not a person who writes reviews much, but I did want to post an un-biased experience I had with Asurion Insurance.

I had a Nexus One phone for 1 year with insurance costing me $5.99 per month. Paid ~ $70. When I dropped my phone 2 days ago and it shattered I filed a claim. I discovered my deductible is $130. Then they told me I would not get the same phone, but rather I get a Sansum Vibrant. When I looked up the price online, I found the Sansum Vibrant selling on ebay for about $180. I also tried to change the shipping address, and even though it hasn't shipped yet they cannot change the shipping to my address back home in Sacramento where I will be for Christmas.

Just an experience I had, you create your own opinion. I will not be paying for insurance in the future, in fact I am going to cancel it right now.

    -Curtis

Re: Asurion cell phone insurance review!

Yes, the insurance may be worth it. But the lies from the customer service folks are terrible. I sent in a razor and was told that I was going to receive a Nokia. I told them in no uncertain terms that I DID NOT want a Nokia please send me something else. I got the Nokia and sure enough, right out of the box it didn't work. Now, I file another claim. After waiting 5 business days for the phone to show up, I call and request that they simply send me my original phone, battery and back cover back to me and I would return all of their crappy equipment. They said fine, we will do that and when they receive the broken Nokia and the just sent Nokia that I would receive a $50 credit. Well, I got my phone back, but with no battery and no back. They claim that they can't send those back. hmmmmm the only two things that were worth anything on that phone were the back and the battery. Yes they will send you a refurbished phone of their choice when they choose to send it, but when they promise you that they will do things for you.....THEY ARE LIARS! Their customer service is non-existent. I now have Verizon with $7 month insurance and most likely a $130 and am going to cancel it. I don't care if my phone craps out tomorrow, I will pay the full price before I pay them another dime in premiums.

Just finished with a claim to Asurion, to no avail. This is the worse insurance company I have ever dealt with. The customer service sucks. Do not buy into this company. If you want to insure your phone, find another way. Asurion needs to go out of business. I am doing everything I can to spread the word.

Re: Asurion cell phone insurance review!

The idiot who first responded to this post - obviously, works at Ascurion. His attitude (suggesting that the phone was dropped in the toilet) is a great example of the arrogant and preposterous service you get when you contact them about a replacement phone. Verizon is all about customer care and support - I'm surprised they use those morons as their "insurance carrier" for blackberries. I received a DEFECTIVE replacement phone - that Ascurion swore wasn't refurbished but I know better. When I called to tell them that I expected a FREE and NEW replacement blackberry in lieu of the defective, refurbished one that they made me pay $80.00 for, they gave me major attitude saying I probably could fix my phone myself if I'd just answer the following 4000 questions!

Get this...When I told these people that I'd be happy to comply with them but if my SECOND replacement phone came with any charges connected to it or if I ascertained that it was not new, but in fact- refurbished; that I'd be getting an attorney involved on my behalf - THE PERSON HUNG UP ON ME! I thought I got disconnected so I tried my call again. I then explained to the new idiot, Ascurion rep that everything from a charge not being held with this phone (even after buying a new battery) as well as the key pad sticking from the moment I first received it required yet another phone being sent out to me. This resulted in an attitude along the lines of "Well that's not our problem, necessarily" I again - threatened to involve an attorney if I wasn't satisfied with the results and replacement. I WAS HUNG UP ON AGAIN! So - guess what? I DID call my attorney who's writing a letter to Ascurion tomorrow and demanding a NEW phone be sent to me or we will be involving Verizon, also.

I don't understand this - if you buy a new Lexus off the showroom floor (i.e. Blackberry FROM a Verizon store) - they don't tell you that the only place you can get a replacement if your NEW car's defective is from Bill's Used Auto Dealership down the street! Why are we stuck with these inferior, non-working, "Insurance replacement" phones and ALSO the demeaning and denigrating staffers at Ascurion? Someone explain this to me! Shouldn't those people be APOLOGETIC instead of self-righteous? Obviously, the phone staffers are told to try and get rid of complaining customers at any cost. That tone becomes evident the moment you start talking to one of those morons about your concerns over being sent a defective, replacement phone.

They are hostile from the moment you say - "The replacement blackberry you sent me doesn't work". What you should hear is, "We're sorry about that, ma'am, we'll be sure and try and help you out as best we can." What's UP with these people? I'm sure Verizon is deluged with complaints about using Ascurion and they must be forced into a service plan with them for some reason. It's a mystery to me, though. Thank GOD for attorneys! I bet their legal department at Ascurion is busy trying to put out fires they started 24/7.

Re: Asurion cell phone insurance review!

The phone I have can be purchased for $100 new, $50 used (the price of my "deductible")

The way I see it, these guys are not an insurance company, they are a repair shop that is SELLING the damaged phones that customers HAVE to send back to them! They call the selling price a "deductible". No different than a direct marketing list being sold by a magazine, except the customer is paying $5/mo for the listing!

I would assume that the manufacturers of these phone would be upset because they're the ones getting a bad reputation when these refurbed phones don't perform! Mine is already freezing up on me after one day of use!

My main beef is with AT&T for false statements by salesperson. We were clearly & concisely told "there is NO deductible" and "you get a NEW phone".

Luckily I only paid for this "insurance" for a month. That at least saved me money on shipping!

Re: Asurion cell phone insurance review!

I guess Asurion has improved, although I wish I could replace my phone for $50.. but at $130, still better than $500, and I'm told I can keep the battery and accessories. I'm glad I got the insurance, because I've only had my phone for not even 3 months, so $145, total to Asurion is still way better than full price.. and isn't that the point of insurance? Not to mention I thought the customer service was very good.
