Some cell phones are truly beautiful, but usually at the cost of functionality. Nokia 6600 Fold is one of those phones, which have a nice balance between design, functionality and price.

The very first impression that Nokia 6600 Fold gives us, is an impression of a good-looking cell phone which is not very useful. Even though Nokia 6600 Fold is not fully equipped with cutting-edge technology it still does its job quite decently and it fulfills the expectations of the targeted public. To be honest, the phone is really good-looking and that is an important factor for quite a lot of people. The outer side of the phone is polished, which makes it even more attractive and it ensures that every touch is pleasant. On the other hand it can get dirty very fast, though that is a problem that most users of attractive cell phones face. So I can not really say that this is something that makes Nokia 6600 Fold a "not so good phone", it is just something that ensures that this phone does not stand out. It gets dirty fast, so what, most other cell phones are a like. The basics of the design is very similar to 6550, which means that this phone's design is best when it is fully opened, which creates quite a view. The size (87,7 x 44 x 15,9 mm) of this cell phone ensures that it fits in hand really comfortably and you can also carry it in your pocket even if you have very tight trousers. All this makes this phone very handy to use and carry around.

The inner side of the phone is also well designed and made of shining materials. It has quite (2,13 inch) a big display for this type of a phone. The resolution is QVGA (240x320). Despite the fact that OLED display is very strong and it features high quality colors and great contrast it does not consume much energy. I am not making this up, or just speculating, or copying some "researches". I know that from experiences, colors are much deeper and more distinctive than colors displayed by TFT displays.

The keypad is also one of the good things about this cell phone. The whole keypad is very attractive and it fits very well with the whole design of the phone. It is not all about the looks, buttons are also very accurate and offer good feedback even at fast typing. That is very important, at least for me, as I type SMS very fast and I had some problems with some cell phoens, but not with this one.

On the outer side of the phone are two specialities. This phone is more or less made to be as practical and as easy to use as possible. So you can easily use it only with one hand, as there is a special button on the right side of the phone, which automatically opens the phone. But this is not all, the phone has one more goody, if you gently tap twice on the front side of the phone then the current time will be displayed.

The operating system is (and at that time was a brand new) S40 version 5 feature pack 1. As expected it has a typical Nokia user interface, though it also has Nokia Maps. Of course Nokia 6600 Fold does not have an integrated GPS, but there are some speculations that GPS will be soon available also in some cheaper phones. So if you want to use navigation you will have to buy an exterior bluetooth GPS and a licence for navigation. Everything else is free, the same goes for maps.

The phone has only 18 MB of internal memory, which is enough for the phone to function, but not enough for an average user. Nowadays most of the consumers want to listen to music on their cell phones, that is why this phone supports microSD cards. The installed XpressMusic player boast with a nice design and with functionality. Besides the phone you also get high quality headphones, which are among the best Nokia headphones. The phone also has an integrated FM radio receiver with RDS function.

Nokia 6600 is equipped with GPRS, UMTS, EDGE and bluetooth, which ensures that you can transfer data relatively fast.

Most of the features mentioned until now were quite good for an average phone. And the camera is really average, or even below average. This phone has a camera with 2 mega pixels resolution and it does not have auto focus. So do not expect to do miracles with this camera, especially not if you are to take photo of something very close to the phone. Nevertheless it is equipped with a flash light, which ensures that you can use camera to some extent even in a bit gloomier circumstances. Video is recorded in VGA quality at 15 frames per second, which is not bad for such a phone.

User interface S40 5 FP1 makes sure the phone is/can be well equipped both with games and software. It has quite a lot of tools for organization as well. For HTML surfing the phone uses Opera Mini, which is a great browser.

Nokia 6600 Fold is not a phone which would with its good looks try to camouflage poor interior. The phone is really well built, it has an attractive design and it is relatively well equipped (except for the camera, which should be in my opinion at least 3,2mp). The reason why the phone is quite expensive is that it has OLED display and good software/OS. I mean it is not a top-notch phone, but you must understand that it was never meant to be one. So one must take that into account and understand that this phone is designed for specific audience and if you are among them, then this phone might be a great choice for you. I will just add one more thing, the phone looks live even better than on photos, really, you should see it.

Nokia 6600 Fold is no doubt a very good-looking smart phone but I am a little apprehensive about its functionality and end user review. However it seems to be quite good from your posting. Thanks for the details.

The special switch to open the flip top is a new feature I think and useful too...touch pad clock is also a new addition...is it worth the price?

Hi there! That was a great review you shared.

"I mean it is not a top-notch phone, but you must understand that it was never meant to be one."

You know you're right about this. Actually I don't like the phone since it has poor qualities when it comes to its camera. It has good OS though just like what you said. I guess that's enough since that's what I need. Again, thanks for the great review of this phone.

Hearing Nokia is being charlenged by Chinese retailer over the heavy fines Nokia levied on them for selling outside their assigned territories.
