I just received a TracFone for Xmas. I haven't activated it yet, and I'm not sure if I want to as the minutes are very expensive.
Is this a good deal, or is there something better?

Not if the minutes are expensive... you can get a free phone or one for very little that offers discounted minutes and free weekend/night... there are always offers like that out there... cheaper minutes are always your best value.

Its been years since I looked... but I remember....
the longer duration the calling card you buy the cheaper each minute was BUT the minutes had to be used by X numbers of days after you started the card or it expired.... SO... if you didn't plan to use it heavily there was no sense in buying the cheaper minutes....
...and in the end it was expensive either way....

To give us a better idea on whether it's a good deal or not... give us an idea here... what specifically are the figures here? That's the best way to know for certain compare a few options apples to apples...

Yea,
Trackfone Minutes come in different package or plans.
What kind of minutes usage are you talking about monthly and so forth.
Some prepaid even offer night and weekend minutes like a contract phone..
like you said though.. price per minute is usually higher.

i say it all depends on your talking habits.
if you talk alot on the phone then i advise you not to use it because you will end up buying alot of minute cards. but if you just using it every blue moon for emergencies then its ok.
