It's just the thing right now. When I was in high school the big thing was a Sony Walkman. At the time, those were the coolest thing on the entire planet! I mean, it played a cassette tape AND picked up AM/FM stations! Back then you paid for a walkman only once and enjoyed it until it was obsolete. With the cell phone generation they have to pay for it every month until it's obsolete.

When I was in high school the "in thing" was CD walkmans, among other non-electronic things (substances, etc.)

The downside is that if the parents fall behind on the cell bill, Cingular holds your child's head as collateral.
(Which really isn't that far off the mark...they've had a firm hold on my cajones since I signed on with them.)
