Here is what i found directly from the Federal Trade Commission website:
"For Release: January 19, 2006
The Truth about Cell Phones and the Do Not Call Registry
The Federal Trade Commission today reiterated that despite the claims made in e-mails circulating on the Internet, consumers should not be concerned that their cell phone numbers will be released to telemarketers in the near future, and that it is not necessary to register cell phone numbers on the National Do Not Call (DNC) Registry to be protected from most telemarketing calls to cell phones.
The truth about cell phones and the DNC Registry is:
Contrary to the e-mail, cell phone numbers are NOT being released to telemarketers, and you will NOT soon be getting telemarketing calls on your cell phone.
There is NO deadline by which you must register your cell phone number on the Registry.
Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations prohibit telemarketers from using automated dialers to call cell phone numbers. Automated dialers are standard in the industry, so most telemarketers are barred from calling consumers on their cell phones without their consent.
The national associations representing telemarketers have stated that their clients do not intend to start calling consumers’ cell phones.
There is only ONE DNC Registry. There is no separate registry for cell phones.
The DNC Registry accepts registrations from both cell phones and land lines. You must call from the phone number that you want to register. If you register online, you must respond to a confirmation e-mail.
While the telecommunications industry has been discussing the possibility of creating a wireless 411 directory, according to the FCC, even if a wireless 411 directory is established, most telemarketing calls to cell phones would still be illegal, regardless of whether the number is listed on the federal government’s National Do Not Call Registry.
In addition, according to the industry:
Your number would not be included in a wireless 411 directory unless you wanted it to be (i.e., you will have to “opt-in”); and
The wireless 411 directory would not be available in a printed, electronic, or Internet list for telemarketers. In other words, a list of numbers on the wireless 411 directory would not be made available to telemarketers."

Well it still doesnt hurt anything if you did put your cell number on the list, it's a government-maintained list and it's not like they don't already have your number if they want it. The Do Not Call Registry is not a hoax and you should still register your home number if you haven't already . As far as it being illegal for telemarketers to call your cell, it still happens sometimes, and I think putting your number on this list might narrow the chances a little more.
Sooo, SORRY to have caused any unnecessary alarm, but when I posted here I had no way of knowing this was a hoax. I assumed it was legit since (insert national corporation's name here ) sent me a fax about it, and I thought I paid royalties to those people in exchange for them keeping me informed on business related matters. Well, anyway take it for what it's worth: you can still register your cell number if you want to, especially if you're one of those people who gets an occasional stray telemarketer call on your cell.
FYI: I should have checked with www.snopes.com first, they maintain an extensive database of internet rumors & hoaxes, and they report back on whether it's legit or not. If I had bothered to look first, snopes knew about this hoax since 1994 when it got started!!! Snopes is always the first place you should check before you forward online gossip to your friends

Telemarketers come in all flavors. I remember a guy I once worked with that used the alias "Harry Dickens". He'd then go on to "warm up" the customer by telling the prospect all about his "Cider" business.
Even though aliases aren't allowed. TM's still use them. I'm banking that's what probably happened with the weird name.

Re: Cell Numbers Going Public to Telemarketers!
While I did register, I just have to say that I find the idea of telemarketing outrageous. I have to pay for the privilege of having a means to telecommunicate and to exploit a service that I pay for in order to sell me goods or services is disgusting.
Along those lines are the shields or decals dealers put on a car YOU pay for. I told one dealer...remove it or pay me to be your rolling billboard...your services aren't free, either are mine. It amazes me that more people don't do the same.

Re: Cell Numbers Going Public to Telemarketers!
lol prime!
i hear what you're saying, but your comparisons are a little off. how do you feel about cable/satellite stations. we're paying to watch them, but they still run commercials.
dealer decals don't bother me. it's when they put on the decal, license plate frame, trailer hitch, and window graphic. that's overkill. there's a gm dealer in town that i won't shop because of their 'rolling billboard' ideals. however, a simple dealer decal on the trunk is fine by me. i'd rather they bring in a few customers off my car, perhaps causing better future prices...optimism?
but how about clothing from the gap, american eagle, or such? you buy their shirt and become a walking billboard. i refuse to buy clothes with their logos on them.
