This is not a hoax or a scam. I received a corporate memo via fax regarding the fact that cell phone numbers are about to be made public and anyone who has not registered with the Federal Trade Commission may begin receiving telemarketer calls on their cell phones within a couple months.
There are fraudulent sites right now trying to charge people for this registration, but the web site and number I am providing to you are legitimate and came directly from the Federal Trade Commission and are free of charge.
The National Do Not Call Registry - www.donotcall.gov
or toll free number: 1-888-382-1222
I haven't seen any discussion about this in the forums but it's very important to get the word out. These telemarketers will eat up your free minutes and start costing you money if you're not on the Do Not Call Registry. Check it out by visiting the web site, or call the toll free number for more info.

yeah, definitely tell your friends and family about it too, if you're like me you know at least a couple people with no internet access, so that's what the toll-free number is for. so do yourself and your friends a favor to pass this around to others and help get the word out.

correction, the Federal Trade Commission provides the National Do Not Call Registry service and I just received an email today from them at my request from www.donotcall.gov that verified my home phone number was registered in May and is effective until 2010. also, i haven't received a telemarketer call at home since i registered last may.

from www.donotcall.gov FAQ:
29. If I register my number on the National Do Not Call Registry, will it stop all telemarketing calls?
No. Placing your number on the National Do Not Call Registry will stop most telemarketing calls, but not all. Because of limitations in the jurisdiction of the FTC and FCC, calls from or on behalf of political organizations, charities, and telephone surveyors would still be permitted, as would calls from companies with which you have an existing business relationship, or those to whom you’ve provided express agreement in writing to receive their calls.
i had to call each of my credit card companies and some other billers and ask them to opt me out of sales calls and them sharing my information with their partner companies, because all that is exempt from the Do Not Call list. also, if you have ever given money to any kind of charity they give all their charity friends your number and none of that is covered either, same thing with participating in political activites or surveys, those people keep your number forever until you say "please remove me from your calling list" and then in most jurisdictions they are required to stop calling you even if they are exempt from the Do Not Call list.
there are probably a few other exemptions i havent listed here, i'm sorry you're having a problem but i'm sure it can all be explained above.
hope this helps
"Your phone number with the last four digits 2590 was registered in the National Do Not Call Registry on 5/7/2005. Most telemarketers will be required to stop calling you 31 days from your registration date. Your registration will (or did) expire on 5/8/2010.
Visit www.donotcall.gov to do any of these things:
-- to renew your registration before it expires
-- to file a complaint
Print this email and keep it for your records."Last edited by Brad729; 01-13-2006 at 11:07 PM.

hey at least the telemarketers havent started outsourcing to india yet like all the customer service people. won't that be a wonderful day when someone calls you from india during your dinner to sell you a local newspaper or collect donations for american charities!

well the point of this thread anyway is to make people aware of the telemarketer nuisance getting ready to invade cell phones nationwide, and that this Do Not Call registry is the currently the best thing you can do to protect yourself from having your free minutes eaten up by sales calls.
btw this registry has been available to landlines for some time, and only recently have laws changed that allow telemarketers to come after our cells! take advantage of this free service provided by our government, who is always looking out for you (not to mention watching you from thousands of miles in space through a super powered spy lens, oh yeah its true )
