    Hi guys:

anyone knows about software that can unlock propietary codes from cellphones, so, for instance, I could bring a "Telus" phone to Cuba, plug it to a pc via usb and run this software, "decode the phone" and be able to hook it up with a Cuban cell phone provider?

    Thanks in advanced,
    Jose

1st off, welcome to CPF! you might want to check out some of the links in my signature to become familiar with the site.

    on to your question...

from what i found, i don't think this will work. telus' phone technology doesn't include gsm coverage, which most other countries use. here's a couple of links to support this answer.

    telus' cellular technology: http://www.telusmobility.com/about/p...rounders.shtml

    cuba's cellular technology: http://www.cellular-news.com/coverage/cuba.php

notice telus is cdma and iden, while cuba is gsm.

    hopefully this helped.

but if you live in the states, a cingular or t-mobile branded phone will get reception in cuba, provided it has the 900 band. and even better, an unlocked phone from one of these providers should accept a 'cubacel' sim card (if you have one) and you won't pay out of country fees.

    Thanks!!!

Thank you very much for the info. I live in Canada but will try to find a phone
with those characteristics before I go.

I just wanted to see if there was a way to find sucvh software because last time I was in Cuba I help my friend hook up a phone he bought in the black market (state controlled stores are too expensive) and he brought it to this guy who did just that, hooked it up to a pc, ran some software and "decoded" the original settings or something like that so that he could use the phone in Cuba with Cubacell.

The guy charged $25 (lots of money in Cuba, about 33Cdn) and does this for a living (nice living i should add)
