goMyPlace is an Open Source alternative to PCAnywhere/GoToMyPC applications
the whole source code is released under GPL - both server and client side.
the project allows to access PC at home from any Internet capable device like PDA, cellphone or just another PC in secure and anonymous way.
i am looking for alpha testers.
Requirements:
- PC can be NATed and firewalled. Linix/OSX/Win32 with Java 1.4 or better (Sun JRE) installed.
- Cellphone or PDA with any internet browser able to parse regular HTML. No JS/Java support is required.
guys, help me to make this project useful.
see GoMyPlace.com for installation instructions

Re: Open Source project allowing to access PC from cellphone
Seems like a good idea! But... I am afraid of a security risk

Re: Open Source project allowing to access PC from cellphone
i appreciate your interest
the project is in alpha stage. from secutiry point of view it is no more (or less) secure than regular yahoo e-mail or ICQ chat.
some points are important
- this is an open source project. daemon runnign on your PC - you can read it, change, do whatever you please
- daemon never accepts incoming connections, never
- daemon connects to Proxy server with static IP. DNS poisoning is not gonna to work
SSL encryption ened-to-end is coming. currently i would not recommend using the application for delivering files containing sensitive personal data. for example, i use the application for moving large files between Win32 and Linux machines home/office. for example, if i have some ZIP downloaded already from slow mirror i can pull it via my office connection which is extremely fast.
how many times you send e-mail to yourself (over non-secured link) just to get that 50K PDF file ? goMyPlace presents a viable and convenient alternative.
goMyPlace is a reverse Proxy - it allows servers to work from behind NAT and firewall. In regular proxy this is a downloader access server via Proxy. In GoMyPlace this is a server is hidden behind Proxy.
Re desktop view: this is not a part of my immediate plans. sending images of desktop (like VNC, goMyPC, PCAnywhere do) is bandwidth and time consuming. besides it exists already.
i suggest an alternative way to control remote machine. One way is VT100 JS based simulation embedded in your browser . this "terminal" allows you to access command shell - DOS window in Win32 and BASH on Linux/OSX. with command shell advanced users can download files via ftp, telnet/SSH hosts, etc.
second option is tunnel of HTTP. many applications you use and want to control remotely have embedded HTTP servers. Among most popular Open Source applications by number of downloads i can name eMule, Azureus. both have HTTP servers and can be controlled using regular internet browser. unfortunately it requires to punch holes in NAT, configure router, etc. with goMyPlace you will have to configure daemon running locally to tunnel HTTP between your favorite applications and external world.
testing goMyPlace Proxy accepts incoming connection on ports 80,81,443,21. It makes the proxy accessible from behind any, but most restrictive firewalls. SOCK3/SOCK4 support is coming.

Re: Open Source project allowing to access PC from cellphone
ports 21, 90, 91, and 443 are commonly blocked by firewalls... wouldn't it be more useful to connect through an open port (such as the SMTP port 25, which is usually open)

Re: Open Source project allowing to access PC from cellphone
Not really rob, port 21 is ftp, so that wouldnt be blocked, and port 443 is https/ssl, so that wouldnt be blocked either, but in saying that if you have a firewall like zone alarm, wich by default practicaly block everything, its only a matter of opening the ports, and you prob wouldnt have an interest in this project unless you know about stuff like that, And it runs on port 80 aswell anyway, so its all good. Firewalls might kick off about incoming connections though rather than outgoing, i know zone alarm would.

Re: Open Source project allowing to access PC from cellphone
local firewall running on the same machine where you run goMyPlace appication is not usually a problem.
the real problem is when you are behind NAT/firewall you do not control. goMyPlace solves the problem of file transfer in most natural way - puts Proxy in between and using ports which are universally accesible
+ nice to have access to command shell. two in one so to speak

Re: Open Source project allowing to access PC from cellphone
version 0.49 is out with proxy supporting local cache
try this link - movie Elephants Dream (aka Orange)

SHA-1 of the file is 6E8005BE76DC630A3FD8A57654F6C6832410C9A6
just 0.5G 10 minutes clip, but a nice demonstration of the performance of the proxy. pls, let me know the average speed or about failures
