    Re: debit card

Umm, do you have your own checking account? If not, you might have to get your parents' help. Seriously, I'd think you have to be 18 but I'm not sure. Another option is prepaid credit cards, but they charge a monthly usage fee. Hey kb, you need to register for that breakout tourney! You forgot to do that and we're waiting for the last slot to be filled.

If you go with your parents, I'm pretty sure you can get one at 17.

    Re: debit card

Depends on the bank and state you are in really. I know if you can open a checking account, you can get a debit card. So the place to find out where you are, is your local banks.

    Re: debit card

I don;t think there is a limit, in general... Your bank may have policies...

As a rule banks will give a debit card to anyone with the appropriate checking account... look at what they have to offer... but be wary! Your debit card does not necessarily have the same safeguards as a credit card - ask the bank folks for details on its "protection".

Just for example, when I was in England and suddenly someone purchased $2000 worth of software in Seoul with my credit card? I didn't have to pay a penny... if I had used the debit card in my possession at whatever shady establishment took my numbers and details they woulda cleaned out my bank account and I would have had no recourse but to complain to the bank.

For that reason I generally recommend that you not use a debit card on the net UNLESS you are certain that you ae backed up in case of theft...

    Re: debit card

I use my debit (bank) card about 12 times a day. Does that make me vulnurable ? lmao

We Canadians are bad, most of us don't carry a single dollar in cash anymore, it's either debit or credit card.

In fact, and I know this is sad, I paid for a newspaper today with my debit card, grand total, $1.17

Yup you are right, the major debit cards Visa and Mastercard, again depending on who you have the debit card with, can have the same protections, but you won't know if you don't ask. And some like mine, to have that protection with the debit card, you pay a yearly fee to have the same protection for your debit card as you do for your credit cards.

And as Jeanie says, if you have certain types of checking accounts, you can have a debit card with it. I know I had my first ATM card attached to my checking account when I was 15/16, whne I had my first job. But at the time you only used them at ATMs to get money.

Hey now don't feel bad, as I use my debit card all the time as well, and rarely have cash on me. But I do keep about $50 bucks in my car at all times ($10 in quarters), all in a lock box in the trunk just in case I need cash somewhere I can't use a credit or debit card.

    Nahhh... I do that too!

if its attached to a major credit card though you may have just cheated the retailer... I believe they take a minimum $3 fee for each transaction

Its the online stuff I worry about most. besides the at-home security risks, how many companies have had hacked databases??
