Being an iPod owner, and moderator of the FS/W forum, I went on a mission yesterday to find a site to register electronic devices. iPods are so easy to lose, steal, etc. Why not register it somewhere so if it is stolen and put up for sale, you can ID it?
The following site does just that. If you suspect a device for sale to be stolen, you can request the serial number and check it here. It doesn't do any good for unregistered devices, but does it hurt.
I registered my iPod yesterday, and from here out, any device I look into buying 2nd hand will be checked there.
Inspice - Offer tracking software for laptops and other devices
It takes about 2 minutes to have a little better piece of mind on your devices.
I failed to mention that if you find something, you can post a "found" ad to help the owner find it. And you can post lost ads as well.

Re: ID stolen items from serial #
n1ckel5, great idea, but only one tiny problem.
Unless more than 50% of the people buying electronics do this, even the people that know about the site but don't use the services of the site, will leave way too many things unregistered. Too bad this can't be done at time of purchase automatically.
Hopefully more people will be doing this! And it would be great if say a few manufactors or providers decided to do this as a courtesy to their customers, even if it was something they did themselves and linked to a national database that could be checked when people buy things new or second hand.

Re: ID stolen items from serial #
Yeah, Bear. I know it's a little too late. lol.
But, ever the optimist I am, it's a start. Imagine if every CPF user put their serial #'s on that site. That's a huge chunk, and we all know that a bunch of CPF members visit other sites.
I'm just trying to spread the word about something I think is a great idea. I mean how great would you feel if you found someone's long lost electronic and were able to return it to them because you're a member of that site.
I thought so.

Re: ID stolen items from serial #
Is that long lost electronic, the best thing since sliced white bread was invented on a Tuesday?
I'm thinking.... Oh ok I'd return it.
And no it's not too late, and you're right, the more folks that know it's out there, the more than will sign up.
So Spread away my friend... spread away.

Re: ID stolen items from serial #
like....for every electronic device that a CPF user registers with the site...they get like $1 CPF....its an incentive...but CPF has no affiliation with that site so its kinda pointless...but an idea!

Re: ID stolen items from serial #
True.
I have no affiliation with the site, but I think it's a really great idea.
And as extra motivation, if I ever lose my device, it'd be cool if someone got it back to me because of that site.
