I am new to chat groups so I hope this works. I own a scuba diving store in Minnesota and go diving in the are lakes alot. I need a cell phone when diving from my boat because I take students. I also need a GPS system so that when I find sunken islands or wrecks I can mark them and navigate back to them with my boat. I know that most cell phones have GPS, however, I need something that will all me to store cordinates and will help point me the way back. I am a verizon customer so the phone will have to work with them.

Take your pick, all newer phones are required to have a GPS chip for the purposes of E911, and most newer phones are capable of running a GPS application like Garmin, TeleNav, Nav4All which is much like having a handheld GPS... try searching those 3 companies with Google, or call Verizon and ask them about it. Don't be fooled by tv commercials into thinking only a handful of phones can do this, practically any newer phone is capable with the right software. My suggestion, if you plan to use your phone for a GPS device, buy one with a large screen, maybe even a PDA phone.

Do you have any ideas about software for the phone?

Verizon has been advertising a GPS software with their latest Razr commercials. They will be able to recommend a compatible phone and the software to go along with it. You're not stuck with the Razr, though it has a fairly large screen, you could get a PDA phone or a number of other models, just depending on what you want in a phone. I'm sure Verizon probably uses one of the three softwares I mentioned above.

I have the Chocolate Phone, it comes with Verizon Navigator (i think a few of their newer phones come with it).

we used it recently to try it out. works pretty good, only complaint (and it could be cuz i was new to it) is we couldnt get it to give us an accurate alternate route (The route it wanted us to take, would have been miserable due to rush hour traffic).

the other thing, we didnt know until we got our bill, is the VZ Navigator uses Data minutes, and if you dont have the Data plan you will be billed for them

Like it's been said, check out any of the phones with VZ Navigator. They will let you use your phone as a GPS.

However, you want to be careful if you plan on taking it scuba diving. Frankly, I think you'd be better off just buying a GPS that's water proof. If any water splashes up and hits your phone, you have a good chance of needing to buy a new phone.
