Man on trial for threats to judge threatens judge - Yahoo! News
MADRID (Reuters) - A Basque separatist prisoner on trial for threatening to kill a judge on Thursday told the presiding judge that he would shoot him and "skin him alive," risking yet another jail sentence.
Ignacio Javier Bilbao Goikoetxea, a convicted murderer and member of armed separatist group ETA, kicked the dock's bullet-proof screen and launched a torrent of abuse at judge Alfonso Guevara and Baltasar Garzon, the judge he had threatened at a previous trial who was appearing as a witness.
"If you're a man, come here ... I'm going to skin you alive. Come here if you've got the balls... I look forward to shooting you seven times when I get my hands on you," the shaven-headed Bilbao Goikoetxea told Guevara in the Madrid courtroom.
It is the second time he has been tried for threatening Garzon after being jailed for two years at a previous trial.
Several violent court appearances by ETA defendants have outraged mainstream Spanish opinion over recent months just as the government prepares peace talks aiming to end 38 years of ETA violence following its ceasefire declaration in March.
Bilbao Goikoetxea is serving a 45-year sentence for killing a local government councilor in 2002. The state prosecutor has also requested another two years' jail for threats made at his last trial and may ask for more after his outbursts on Thursday.
"I believe in the armed struggle. I will continue with the armed fight until I die or I'm killed, until we have won an independent Basque homeland," he shouted at the judges.

Re: This guy cracked me up
The Basque Separatists of Spain aren't something to laugh about. It's a really sad conflict that's claimed hundreds of lives, if not in the thousands. I think they have a right to want independence from Spain, but the fact they've resorted to terrorism for nearly 4 decades has made them no better than any of the Middle Eastern terrorist organizations that the USA has had its own share of conflicts with. This is why I think they are further from gaining independence than they've ever been; Spain would be wise to keep its control over a group of separatists who would likely run a sovereign nation much in the same way they've handled their terrorist organization.

Re: This guy cracked me up
No, you're right. For someone who doesn't know anything about the ETA and all the bad stuff they've done since the separatist movement began, the guy would make anyone laugh. I just know a lot about their history, and it would be kind of like laughing at something osama said; even though he's crazy and says nutty things he's still a terrorist, and Bilbao Goikoetxea's threats put those judges in danger because there are more terrorists who believe in the same thing he does.

Re: This guy cracked me up
One thing the Spanish government is doing correctly is handing out extremely long jail terms. When these separatist groups begin killing government officials, it needs to be stopped and clamped down on, as a coup d'état is just down the road.
Just like we had here in Canada with the FLQ (Front de Liberation de Québec) back in 1970.

Re: This guy cracked me up
you're welcome
Something like this story happened while a guy was on trial. Next thing you know, the judge is dead and the guy gets off. Hmmm? ALL threats should be taken seriously. (Well, on repo's I've been threatened to be stabbed, "shanked", shot, hit, run over, have had my truck rammed (messed the car up more than my truck ), etc... Normally, you don't take those people seriously, but you should.)Last edited by Robb4248; 09-08-2006 at 03:50 PM.

Re: This guy cracked me up
Robb, very very true. I have a certain personality to myself, not really arrogant or anything like that, but people really don't like me at times. I probably get these threats a few times a year from people who are actually serious about them. I always document them and make sure someone else (close friend, family, etc) know about them, so at least there's record of it.
And on KBoi's comment, Robb's avatar makes me laugh.
