Anyone notice the communication devices in Avatar? They fit around the users neck and include a bluetooth like ear piece. On them reads "THRT".
It looks like only Avatars, Neytiri and Tsu'tey are using them (it's assumed Jake gave them the devices so they could communicate with eachother)
I'm wondering why James Cameron made this a two piece design? Why not just make it an ear piece like current designs?
Anyone figure out what THRT is supposed to stand for?
Kinda reminds me of this (made by Roadrunner):

Re: Communication devices in Avatar
The only reference that i have found for THRT is "Tactical Hostage Rescue Team" but it doesnt add up with the story, of course.
I can answer why there are 2 pieces to the device. the earpiece is self-explanatory. The neck-piece is meant to pick up the vibrations of the larynx, or human voice box. The benefit of the neck-piece as seen in the film is concealment. obviously you dont want to be talking on the radio while trying to conceal yourself or you would be discovered, captured, or killed in the field. The neck-piece of the "THRT" device is sensitive enough to pick up the sound of whispers made by the wearer, hence its tactical advantage while in concealment.
Hope this answers your question.
