    I don't seem to be able to get to the bottom of this simple question: How to use my cell phone as a modem for my laptop and therefore use my voice minutes instead of signing up for the new GPRS data services? I go to one store and they tell me yes I can do that, go to another and they tell me 'no way you can do that'... you can only do that through the GPRS systems (not using the voice minutes).

    I also see in the Nokia forum that someone has been able to do that successfully with a Nokia phone (not sure what provider).

    I have the v400 connected to my laptop using a data cable with mobile Phone Tools 2.0. They can exchange/synch up data just fine. I can even tell the phone to dial a number from the laptop and it works fine. The only thing haven't been able to have the phone do is connect to my ISP. When I connect to the ISP (SBC) I get the message "There is no answer" (the dialup connection type on my laptop is GSM-data). Have tried all ISP access numbers in the area (about a dozen). According to the last person at Cingular I talked to, he said that basically Cingular wants to be the ISP and that's why it won't work on their network.

    Not sure if I buy that story and was wondering if anyone has any word of wisdom or experience on the subject.

    Thanks for your time and help.

    Felice C

    Have the tools, still won't work

    I'm running a V400. I have the same issue only on 2 fronts. I've downloaded the connection manager tools and called Cingular to get them to help me set it up. They were happy to help me provided that I subscribed to a $79.99 Data Service Plan. I'm not digging this.

    So now I try to use my V400 as a modem. Should work right? My XP Laptop recognizes the modem. Even attempts to dial out whatever number i tell it to. But after dialing the phone immediatly gives me a Three Tone Error message and the connection is closed.

    Motorola sez there is no way to use this phone as I dial out modem. I seem to think that one amongst us has gotten it figured out. Can that someone please lead me to the light?

    V400 - Data cable + charger (do they work?)

    I keep seeing these data cables on ebay that supposedly charge the phone from the usb current while data is being transferred. Does anyone use such a device and how successful have you been with it? (i.e. will it keep the phone charged for hours at a time while you use the phone as a modem?)

    Thank you!

    I've looked into this before too...you aren't going to get it to work since you have no dial tone on the V400. your only option is to use the GPRS data service. sorry.
    The Progression: Nokia 5165 --> Moto v120t --> Moto V60ti --> samsung s307 --> Moto V400 --> Blackberry 6280 --> Sony Z500a --> Nokia 6230 --> Nokia 6820

    I'm almost as addicted to Cell phones as i am to VW's. Almost.
