Can someone please tell me if GSM is better than CDMA (or vice versa) and for what reasons? Thank you in advance.

See More: Why is GSM superior to CDMA (or vice versa)?

Well...for one, they're 2 completely different technologies, and I'm personally not well-versed in the intricacies of each.

GSM stands for Global System for Mobile and CDMA stands for Code Division Multiple Access. Anyway, I don't necessarily think that one is better than the other, at least in terms of the consumer's experience would be.

Signal strength is so variable and dependant on many factors, such as type of phone, the environment, proximity to a tower, interfering objects (such as old metal buildings), and probably the most important: frequency.

I'm not sure what frequencies CDMA operate on in the US, but GSM operates on the 850Mhz and 1900Mhz band (as determined by the FCC). Apparently, lower frequencies (in this case the 850) tend to have better signal "pass-through" than do their higher-freq counterparts. This means that the 850Mhz band can pass through walls and other barriers BETTER than the 1900Mhz freq band.

I suspect that Verizon (which operates on a CDMA technology) transmits on a lower frequency which probably makes them such an effective wireless provider.

I use Cingular in NYC, and since they bought out AT&T Wireless, their coverage has improved considerably, since they now have access to offer wireless service on both the 850 and 1900 band (old AT&T towers=850Mhz, and the TMobile Roaming-friendly towers=1900Mhz).

If you're looking to start a contract with either type of company (GSM or CDMA), I would suggest surveying the coverage signal strength of the various wireless providers in your area and determine which one you're gonna go with depending on where you're gonna be the most....

    Hope I added some insight...

    Yes and.....www.cdg.org/worldwide/index.asp

The CDG site also has a very complete overview of CDMA technology. Probably more answers than you have questions, but there ya go.

actualy verizon especialy in the tri state area is mainly a gsm provider. they do have some cdma towers but those are from companys they bought out thats why most verizon phones are tri band for tdma cdma and gsm.

little more info. Verizon (CDMA) still operates their analog (AMPS) service in all of thier coverage areas. This is a nice benefit because the analog signal has the stongest output and will have a better chance reaching a tower that is far away. You really need to talk to people in your area to see which of these two providers have the best service. Don't even consider any providers other than Verizon or Cingular, it's not worth it!

I live in pittsburgh and there are a few patchy places around here that don't get that good of service such as valleys, people's basements, etc, it's nice to be able to drop down to the stronger analog signal. Unfortunately I can't since i'm on Cingular GSM which has no analog component. If you are looking for the extra coverage of analog, make sure your new verizon phone is "Tri-band" capable, which means that it will be able to drop down to the stronger analog signal.

P.S. Cingular still has analog with it's old TDMA/AMPS service. This by far gets the best service out of any technology, period. The problem, it's becoming extinct.

P.S.S GSM is used all over the world. If you are a traveler, you can use your GSM phone anywhere. I used mine in Rome. I could make and recieve calls using my regular number. Pretty Cool!

There is a good article at the cellphonehacks website in the FAQ section about each TDMA, GSM, CDMA.

using your gsm around the world, first of all you need a phone that has the 900/1800 bands, and you will pay a hefty per minute rate if you use your american sim card and phone #

    - Verizon is an ALL CDMA carrier. They don't have GSM anywhere.

    - Verizon doesn't have any tri-band phones. They have TRIMODE phones for Analog, CDMA800 mode and PCS CDMA mode. The Samsung SCH-A790 would be an exception to this because it is a "world phone" that uses CDMA in the 800/1900 bands for the US, Canada and the Americas, and GSM for other countries where GSM operates at 900 and 1800Mhz.

    - All technologies used in the US (with the exception of Nextel's IDEN), operate in both 800Mhz (a.k.a. 850Mhz) and 1900Mhz bands. The technology used by a company is not determined by the FCC, but by whatever the carrier wants to use. Verizon and Sprint use CDMA, Cingular and T-Mobile use GSM. However, Cingular still has their old TDMA and Analog networks left over. The FCC only determines which bands will be available for carriers to use for wireless service. Canada and the rest of Central and South America have followed the same pattern as the US by using CDMA, Analog and TDMA. The rest of the world has been using GSM predominantly. In the last 2 years or so most TDMA carriers in the Americas have been switching to GSM making GSM a more powerful technology in the Americas, but still using the same 800/1900 bands as the US. There are some (very few) exceptions in South/Central America where some countries use either 1800Mhz or 900Mhz in addition to 800/1900Mhz like the US.

    - Finally, it is hard to say which technology is superior because they all have their plus and minuses. However, one thing is clear, the CDMA air interface is always superior for multi-user environments. It is more spectrum efficient for voice, more efficient for data transfer and easier to deploy. Did you know that the 3G GSM networks will be using a CDMA-like air interface? Guess why. Now, some say that GSM is the global standard and it is used by more than 70% of the world, but that doesn't make GSM's air interface technically better.

Now, on the other hand the other aspects of GSM networks, such as the core network, are clearly better than the core used on CDMA networks. GSM networks are more "roaming friendly" than CDMA networks, so all your features work while roaming. GSM networks also have more network features than CDMA networks. You can program network codes the customers can use to access special services or you can configure all features of call forwarding right from your phone. CDMA users have to call their carrier to setup any features other than "call forward ALL". GSM networks also have 6-way calling available, something yet to be seen in any CDMA network.

Those are some of the highlights. I am sure there are more.

Actually CDMA is now in use in many more foreign countries than what most people think. It's being used in South America, Hong Kong, Mexico, and even Taiwan to name a few.

GSM is more of a worldwide standard, although CDMA is also available worldwide, and they both have high-speed data capabilities, the only thing i'm not too sure of with CDMA is when it comes down to international roaming, but GSM is just simpler when it comes to that. But hey, whatever floats your boat man!
