I am a cingular customer and i just recently bought a phone that is locked to AT&T. Now that the two have merged i was expecting to be able to use my sim card in it. But it ask for a subsidy code, is there anything i can do to get my sim card to work or do i have to just unlock it.

You'd think that after the merger Att/Cingular would have the courtesy to unlock it for you but i doubt it, see Cingular would prefer you to buy one of their handsets before they give you an unlock code unless of course if it was a Cingular branded phone then they would unlock it for you after 90 days of having your account active, but not the case with an Att branded phone, save yourself the runaround and just get it unlocked, that's what i did with my V600 Att branded phone to use with my Cingular account.

yeah, just search online how to unlock it. Also, some of the guys at the cellphone customization booths at the mall know how to do it.

Just try one of your local third party stores, if not you can always try to remotely unlock through a web site, though i prefer to just get it done at a local store.
Here's one place.

You said to just get it unlocked, but where do you go to do that?

Try the above link first, or if it is not a nokia, search the forum for that make.
Otherwise:
www.ebay.com
type in "unlock code nokia 3300" or whichever model you have, and read the auctions carefully. If it is a nokia, it can be done over the air, ie they email you the codes, you put in your cingular sim card, and enter in the provided codes (nokia codes run 5 bucks after shipping).
The phone you purchased is a phone that was made PRIOR to the merge, that is why it is locked to at&t's system.... these phones were not programmed to automatically switch when the merger took place - the phone has no idea anything has changed... i do not have unlocking software or codes at my cingular store, and cingular has not provided us with such. you can find a local place to unlock it, but it is cheaper to do it over ebay because people whore out products and services.

Try cingucell.com
You can try cingucell.com. I got my LG phone unlocked from them. They only charge 19 USD.
