Can I use my Sony T637 that I purchased a few months ago when I was with Suncom with Cingular?

I was with Suncom for several years but switched temporarily to Verizon (work suggested I do it), but left before the 15 days trial period was up because I couldn't get a Verizon signal in my house. I went back to Suncom and specifically bought the Sony Ericsson T637 because I was told that when the switch over to Cingular takes place (I live in VA), this phone would work with Cingular. Now I am told that it won't work, and I have to get a new phone and of course the ones they give away for free (to former Suncom customers) are basically useless. I like the T637 because of Bluetooth, size, its is basically brand-new, I have the cables, etc.

Can anyone tell me if the SIM card from Cingular will work in this phone? My local store says "NO" (but couldn't explain why), a person at a cingular kiosk at the Maryland Outlet Mall said "Sure it will work" and the 800 number said if the phone was 'branded as Suncom' then it "likely wouldn't work." Up until a few weeks ago you could buy this phone on Cingular's website...Now it is gone.

Any help will be appreciated. Can I just get Cingular's Sim card and have it work with this phone?
