I've been using ATT for about 4 years.. I've always had trouble with them ($60 dollars on a $40 dollar plan, changing coverage areas, etc) but for the most part my phone starts screwing up before my contract runs out (how convenient). I thought mine would have run out in august but it turns out I have to wait another year or pay $175 to get out of this. I was wondering if there is any possible way to get around this $175 so I can leave and go to verizon. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Plain and simlpe: Nope. You signed a contract in order to get discounted equipment, and tehre is no way out of it unless ATT feels like dropping you. When you sign the contract you give them all that power.

    yes there is a chance.

if you want to migrate yourself to a cingular plan, you can do so.. the thing is, if youre still in contract with at&t, you will have to pay full price for the new phone that you want. basicly, you will switch to cingular, do a new 2 year service + rateplan, but pay outright for the phone.

ALTHOUGH. there ARE ways around this.. contact your customer service and tell them how you are unhappy with your current phone/plan and that you want to switch but you cannot because of contract issues.. if anything speak to a supervisor and they should be able to WAIVE your termination fee. keep in mind this is only when you are migrating to cingular.

That's odd. When I switched from AT&T to Cingular about 5-6 months ago I was able to get the discount on my L1400 for the 2 yr contract agreement. I got the phone for $50 on cingular.com. I clicked the link for switching from AT&T to Cingular, got the new contract got the new phone with the discount.

if you are out of contract, youre fine.. plus, when the merger first completed, ANYONE from at&t were able to migrate over with no worries, even in contract. but they noticed they were losing money due to free phones..

say you walk in, when at&t was still at&t.. get a free phone for 2 years.. merger happens. 2 months later you'd walk into cingular, migrage, do another 2 year, get another free phone. BAM. thats 2 free phones in your hand.

i honestly still dont get HOW they lose money, since its one company.. but im guessing maybe the money somehow still goes to at&t corp? not sure exactly.. but yeah thats what went down, heh.

Normally if you're having problems with coverage, networks problems and your service for the most part is unusable, ATT will let you end your contract without paying the ETF..but in your case you say it's just your handset, so like most carriers they would just offer a new handset...

Another way to end your contract would be to migrate to Cingular and then end your contract before the 30 days are up, but that's not fullproof and i think they already caught on with that maneuver....

    bologna. bologna.

    1. if you migrate to cingular, your term fee will be waived, and you will be eligible for the 2yr prices on equip. YOU WILL NOT HAVE TO PAY FULL RETAIL PRICE AS STATED ABOVE.

    2. you DO NOT have to contact ATT customer service and DO NOT have to speak to a superviser in order to get your termination fee waived. just go into a cingular store, and it will be done when you migrate.

    3. if you don't want to migrate to cingular, and you don't want to pay the early termination, purchase an ATT phone off of ebay (make sure it is the correct technology, which should be gsm if your current phone is only a year old).

    4. pay the early termination fee and go to verizon. no way around it. if that is what you want, then you will have to pay.

hope this helps. i don't know where some people get their crazy information.
