lol, my phone does stink! i'd own a razr if it was my decision, but my wife does the bills and it's hard to convince her of some expenses. plus, i always have some new toy that i'm eyeing, so it gets old to her....lol. but, we'll probably get 2 when it's upgrade time!
for the phantom location, we're about 10 miles directly north of illinois (as the crow flies) but to my knowledge, the nearest gsm service is freeport (t-mobile), which is farther.
since you work for cingular, send me a new phone if you have one laying around!
There was an overlapping of coverage into WI, but it would be a little south east of the location that you gave me. Only other thing that I can think of is that you got into an area that was clear of hills, trees, building and the like and just so happened to have a straight shot to a tower miles away that gave you signal. IL is pretty flat but I'm not too sure about WI where we are talking about..
I wish I could give you a phone bud, but the only thing free around here, even to me, is the TP in the bathroom..
sw wisconsin, where we're talking was missed by the glaciers back in the day, so it's not flat and open like illinois, but there are no mountain ranges. but it's still a very rural, heavily wooded area where even cdma carriers have trouble providing service to all their customers. there is a us cell tower within 5-6 miles which doesn't always provide reception at the provided address.
