I received one of the letters. They have a special department for this situation. They're not doing anything to help people. Although they say it doesnt violate the contract (for them to cancel), I told them that if they suddenly upped their rates I couldn't call them and say it's too expensive and just get out of my contract, so why should I be forced out of my contract because of this?
Here's their special phone number directly to them. PLEASE call them and start complaining. I want them to retract this horrible idea. They said they just started sending out letters in Feb!

How exactly are you having roaming charges if Cingular GSM cannot roam?

the whole point of this issue is that cingular customers are roaming (on t-mo, or other gsm carriers) more than 50% of the time. therefore causing higher costs to cingular.

i'm hearing that this is embedded somewhere in the contract we (users) sign at activation, but haven't confirmed it yet.

Yes, they say it's in the contract specifically that we cannot roam more than 50% of the time. They told me I signed that contract. In fact I did not sign anything because I called in and had them ship my phone to me. Even the automated system they make you listen to in order to confirm that you agree didn't say anything about it.
They did agreed to send me the code to unlock my phone. However if I choose to stay on Cingular I can never roam again in order to 'control how much I roam' so it appears Cingular doesn't actually mean you can use "more bars everywhere".

Has anybody noticed the more recent Cingular commercials... "More bars in more places...that's our goal"

funny how a slight change in wording can change the meaning so much legally, yet still sound the same to the consumer!

i'm pretty familiar with this, working for a food ingredient company. talk about creative wording with your nutrient label claims.....
