That's stored on the phone's settings not on the sim card, and in this case since it's from a different carrier it has to be re-configured.

Ok thats odd. It seems my voicemail number and SMS config is stored on the SIM. It is prob different with your carrer. Although this is the case with Fido and Rogers here in Canada.

Re: dumb question about using an unlocked phone

A voice mail number can be stored in a sim card just like a regular number, but the one that's stored in your voice message menu stays with the phone no matter what, nothing to do with your sim card.

As far as MMS/SMS settings go, your phone comes with a list of carriers that can be set as default for your settings, but most of the time they are for carriers outside the US, also if the handset you're using is from a different provider you will need to re-configured your phone.

Again your sim card does not store MMS/SMS settings, if that was the case we wouldn't need configurators and it would save us the headache of setting our handsets when using one from a different provider.

Thats so weird. I guess my Cingular v400 and factory default Moto A780 had the fido SMS Service center number for SMS already set as default when I bought it. (+15149931123). All I did is put my smart card in and it had everything set up. I know MMS need you to set it up manually. (Rogers does an OTA update so it is automatic thus no set up for MMS and WAP/Internet). Ill try a few things. I will prob prove my self wrong with the SMS (NOT MMS) / VM Service center number stored on sim. I will get back to you guys!!

ok i see where the confusion is, you are talking about SMS, not MMS...

On some handsets you still have to manually set your call center number in order to get Voice Mail notifications as i had to do on all my unbranded unlocked Motorolas i've used, but then we were originally discussing Cingular's network, not Fido's or Roger's so there's a chance that they are set up a bit different.
