As long as the phone is unlocked or locked to ATT. Be sure to get one that has 850/1900Mhz.

okay, what does the question have to do with the thread title?,, tdma will be phased out soon, and buy a gsm phone using the 850mhz and 1900mhz because cingular uses both frequencies, so a dual band is good for you, unless you want to travel overseas, get a triband and quadband to make it even better

yeah, try a v60 or a 3560. Note that cingular will start charging tdma people $5 a month at the end of the year, in order to rid customers so they can kill tdma.
gsm generally is better as they are slowly removing tdma from metropoliatin areas first(yes first) . so if you live in boonies stay with tdma, other wise get gsm

Can you provide a link or some evidence? Just out of personal curiosity.

    Thanks

You can either buy a older TDMA phone that's still locked to AT&T and keep using your AT&T plan, until they turn off the towers, or you can buy an unlocked GSM phone, that's quad or tri-band (as long as the tri-band uses 850/1900).

While it's true that Cingular is phasing out the TDMA users over time, as far as I know the deadline is end 2007-2008 before they no longer will be offering sevice to current TDMA users, either by upgrading towers for GSM or taking the TDMA out of service during their upgrade phase out period. In some areas of the country, the TDMA serice will be phased out sooner than others.

And it's often without warning that may fnd that your phone no longer has service. So if your cell phone service is critical to you, best to find out when your area will be phased out, and decide then which option works best for you, as far a getting a new phone.

My Cingular rep told me the exact same thing, didn't tell me when though. I will try and find out more.

    Re: Tdma Vs Gsm

Just like what haydeno said. With their September invoice, ATTWS customers will be receiving a monthly service charge of $4.99. That goes for each TDMA line they have on their account.

They're doing this because of the lingering TDMA service and maintenance.

More than likely this going to be another way current ATT customers are going to vent on how Cingular "sucks".

We received a memo also talking about the service charge for TDMA phones.
