I really like this phone, but I'm wondering how reception is going to be. Firstly I hear that LG generally has worse reception than others. Secondly, I'm hearing that some people are having problems with switching from 3G towers to other towers.

Could people that have this phone please comment on Cingular's ability to hold calls and reception quality? FWIW I live in the Chicago metro area which I would assume would be pretty well set for 3G.

    Re: LG CU500 Reception

You might want to try posting in the LG forum, you might get more response there. On reviews of this phone, try Phonescoop or CNET. That is the most feedback I have seen from it on those sites.

It doesn't seem like you're getting alot of response from this phone, considering all the other threads you started. With all your posts, it seems you are very hesitant. You say that this is the phone that you are going to get, but you're not sure if it will work out with you. The only way to know for sure if you like the phone or not is to try it out yourself. Try not to judge the phone becasue of other people's opinions/reviews. Others might not like it, but it might turn out to be one of your best phones you ever used. Maybe a reason why you are not getting a response is because GSM LG phones are not known to be dependable, and you are posting in the Cingular forum. Some people tend to shy away from these handsets. The CDMA LG's are somewhat of a different story. I usually hear people who have them say it's one of their best phones ever used. Now, I'm not knocking the CU500 because it's a GSM phone, I just prefer not to get an LG phone. When the 8125 1st came out, some of my friends were saying that it sucks, flimsy keyboard and breaks easily. When I had the chance to use one for a month, that thing kicked @ss. The Moto MPX220 on the other hand, that's a different story. But that's just my opinion based on my expereince.

Besides, if you do get one, you still have that 30-day grace period. If you don't like it, you can change it for someting else like maybe the D807 or something. Just like those Nike ads say man, "Just do it".

    Re: LG CU500 Reception

Thanks for the post and the wise words. It gets so confusing unless you're up on all the latest technology. I just don't want to end up with a great phone and horrible reception. But most are saying it's pretty good in larger markets. But it sounds like LG has had problems with reception in the past, and only the newer LG phones are starting to get better at it.

On a side note, it's funny but the original reason I wanted to upgrade my phone was to just get MP3 and a camera. Then I go into a store and see the streaming video, and then I decide I need to have it. The funny thing is I'll bet I use it once in a great while, if I ever do.

I really just want a great mp3 phone with a great camera. For Cingular, there aren't many. The CU500 has nice MP3 features (outside controls, stereo bluetooth, expandable to 1 gig memory, nice external speakers), and people are saying a decent camera so it's on the top of my list. But to get the in-store discount to $100, you have to get MediaNet which as I said is cool, but not needed.

Actually, I wish Cingular had something like the Samsung SGH-P850. It has a 3.2 megapixel camera, QVGA screen, and handles bluetooth stereo headphones. But it's limited to 512 meg external card and the MP3 player is only ok. Wish they would combine the P850 camera and screen into the CU500. I'd dive on that.

    Thanks again.

It seems that you prefer flip phones with the given models you just mentioned. But if you're patient and you're willing to go with another form factor, you might want to take a look at the Sony Ericsson W810i or the Nokia N80. They both will be carried by Cingular later this year (Q3). This might help you out

Yes, definitely flip or clamshell. But the W810i or the Nokia N80 look REALLY promising and I could live with the slide phone if they turn out that great. Then again, the waiting game with cell phones is a waste because just when something comes out that seems perfect, another thing is on the horizon which is "better".

I think I'm going to take the CU500 route for now, and I'll bet I'll be more than happy. Like you said, if reception is terrible, I can return it.
