Ok, so I am under a 4 line family plan, and my contract ends in about a month. The fam and I are in desperate need of some new phones...I asked someone about signing up for a new contract but I was told you have to wait 6 months to start a new one...is that true?

I was also thinking about switching service providers, but I would like to stay with Cingular...Online it says our phones our eligible for upgrade Nov. 8th, what exactly is up with that? Do we just continue the contract and pay for a new phone...? I wish I could know how much the upgrade would cost...I was wanting to get a Motorola SLIVR. Thanks for the advice!

What that means is, on 11/8 your contract end date has arrived. You now have the choice of going month to month on your current plan, renewing your Cingular contract (with a phone upgrade), or walking away.

They'd probably love it if you continued on with paying and keeping your old phones.

But ultimately, they want you to renew with them.

If you like the idea of being month to month, try looking for a Cingular phone on ebay or in the FS section. You can also get an unlocked GSM phone, but make sure it has the 850 and 1900 bands.

Yes, don't worry. They won't make you not use your phone for 6 months. Use your phones until 11.8.06 and then as nickel said you can drop your cingular service and phones and go to a new carrier, buy new cingular phones and lock in for another 1-2 years, or keep using your phones until you decide to do one of the above.

Cingular wants you in a contract, because if you screw up and don't pay they get extra money and hit your credit so that you are NEVER a customer again...(with certain exceptions), and so that if you break your contract other carriers will not want you either... then they win..

Ok, well I understand I can upgrade my phones, but can I cancel my contract and start a new 2 year upgrade and get new phones with the discount when you sign up with a new contract?

I was told that I can only upgrade my phones (and get them at a much higher price than if I signed up for a new contract), or I would have to wait 6 months to sign up for a new 2 year and get the great savings on new phones..

OK, as of Wednesday, you can go into a Cingular store, get a new phone fully discounted, and as long as you sign a new contract. On Wednesday, you can also give your Cingular phones back and go to a new carrier without paying the breach of contract fee, or early termination fee, which is $175. On Wednesday, you can also do nothing and wait until a later time to do any of the above.

You don't have to wait another six months to get a fully discounted phone.
