I know tdma is on the way out. My tdma plan is $119 for unlimited incoming calls, all nights and weekends, and about 1700 regular minutes. Everybody has told me to never cancel my plan since it isn't available anymore. This plan started 5 years ago with Suncom. Now my coverage is getting worse so I called Cingular and they are telling me that for the last 4 months, not counting nights and weekends, I am averaging a little under 2000 minutes a month which includes both incoming and outgoing minutes. The new plan they have for $99 would be for 2000 minutes plus unlimited nights and weekends. For about $9.00 xtra a month my nights and weekends can run from 7pm to 7am.The one big thing I liked for my job is the unlimited incoming calls. At first glance it would seem about an even swap dollar for dollar and minute for minute. I just can't seem to run out and change over for some reason. I keep remembering folks at Suncom telling me not to change. Do they know something I don't? I think the new plan would be gsm. Is the service area not up to par? Should I just ride out tdma untill '08? Am I overlooking something obvious? Have I asked the right questions? Thanks in advance !!!

Re: should I switch from TDMA to GSM ?

As you noted, tdma is on the way out, and you are losing coverage. Switching to GSM will give you coverage over almost the entire country, and it will be constantly improving. Plus you will save about 10 bucks a month with the new plan from what you said. The folks at Suncom obviously did not anticipate an equal or better plan from Cingular, nor did they anticipate the loss of TDMA.
Also, switching to GSM opens the number of phones to choose from.

The tdma network is still much larger then the total GSM network. And GSM doesn't have amps bakup like your tdma does. You may find that Cingular's GSM network will work fine for your coverage needs. But check out the GSM coverage before you switch. Heck, maybe even try it out first. Just remember, once you make the switch, there's no going back. You'll be stuck. So due your research on coverage for where you need it before you make your move. Particularly, the more rural, and the more West you go in the US, the better the tdma coverage, and the less the GSM coverage gets. If you are on the East Coast (Carolinas I presume) then coverages are probably more equal between networks, and will probably be fine for your needs.
