Phone Upgrades, someone explain it to me

I just don't get it. I though that all you do is click on the upgrade link and pick your phone. I didn't know you had to extend the contract. Now I am on a family plan with my sister and my parents. So can we all get phone upgrades? How do you do this? I am set on the phone I want and its not available on cingular.com. Its the sony ericsson w810i and its free on amazon.com. On amazon it has an option to upgrade but it says to upgrade you arent allowed to be trying to extend a family plan. What's the deal with that? I know my dad (the main account) doesnt want a new phone as he has one of those fancy PDA smartphones. I have a ****ty LG flip phone. Is there any way I can get that phone on amazon? I am just really confused with all this upgrade stuff and cingulars double talk.

go to wal-mart's connection center...its a whole lot better and faster...i just upgrade on wed. 12-20-2006...to a lg cu500

I forgot to mention, i think. The phone I want is 200 bucks or more in any of the stores so thats why I want to do it on amazon.

You can get pretty good unlocked phones on ebay. Of course the more fancier onces will be more expensive.
