Reports are that Cingular is going to become AT&T this year due to the purchase of Cingular and Bellsouth by AT&T. They are planning to rebrand Cingular, not sure what will happen with the Cingular brand. So all you Cingular haters out there, 2007 brings you a new name to your cell phone provider.

They will be phasing out the Cingular brand and switching to AT&T. Wireless will NOT be in the new name.

    Read this from Bloomberg:

    Chicago Tribune news | Registration

which among other articles confirm Wireless will NOT be part of the new AT&T name. The article you refer to merely states AT&T will be back in the wireless business as of 1/15/07.

Yep, what I've read it is will be AT&T, the wireless will be there, but sort of implied. Verizon is still Verizon Wireless, but they don't always brand with "Wireless"

I don't get it, I saw a "Cingular is now Att" Commerical, yet it's still cingular.com and what not, what will the phones be branded?

Transitional marketing is a funny business. I wouldn't be too bold in making a guarantee that AT&T Wireless won't ultimately be the the name assigned to the new AT&T mobile division. You need to remember that the public's heads are still spinning. First there was AT&T Wireless, then after much pain and effort, everything was switched over to Cingular. Now they are switching back to AT&T. We know why this was all done but we are a select few who follow this stuff. The average Joe on the street is confused. AT&T Wireless to Cingular back to AT&T? They are asking: "What is going on?"

Dumping the Cingular name as quickly as possible is a good strategy. SBC and Bell South are now one entity. There will never be any infighting over what the name of the division should be. They are ALL AT&T now. But over the long haul, there is a need to differentiate AT&T wireline from AT&T wireless and the easiest way to do that is to reintroduce the "new AT&T" over a few months and THEN slowly add the Wireless handle back into the name.

I predict you'll drive down the street and see AT&T Wireless on storefronts and billboards this time next year.

I looked on Cingular.com and read about the merger. It seems that maybe the wired and wireless phone services will work in unison, if I understand it correctly. Apparently one of the options that will be available for the wireless subscribers will be free calls to all at&t customers, wired or not. This is a step beyond the current M2M free option. I'm thinking the at&t phone service will be combined, but time will tell.

It's funny. The poll at the about.com link you posted seems to show that most people would prefer to keep the original Cingulbar name rather than switching over to AT&T.

    Interesting.

I was in love with AT&T and if they had not turned into Cingular, I'd still have them. Cingular is worse than Sprint (now THAT'S bad). I am pretty happy with Amp'd, but I might check AT&T out for business phones.

I was in love with AT&T Wireless for a long time too. Then they hired that horrible man John Zeglis as CEO and he totally drove AT&T Wireless into the ground and ruined the company. The "coup de grace" to AT&T Wireless was Zeglis selling out to Cingulbar to pad his own pocketbook.

The original AT&T Wireless as McGaw Wireless and then AT&T Wireless under Michael Armstrong was a wonderful company. They were customer responsive and they were a technology-forward thinking company. Ziggy Zeglis was only focused on how to feather his own nest. He should be shot for what he did to AT&T Wireless.

It remains to be seen how Cingulbar will do as the new AT&T Wireless. I have my doubts. I think they are too big and too bureaucratic now and too focused on only making money. Nothing wrong with making money. But there needs to be other things you focus on too in running a healthy and consumer sensitive company.

They're not going to rebrand the whole corporation over to the Cingulbar name. So this has always been "just-a-matter-of-time" kinda thing before the AT&T Wireless name was resurrected.

Re: AT&T buys Cingular and will rebrand

Everyone I talk to that were old ATT wireless customers liked them far better than they liked Cingular. I really don't care since I use Verizon, but I really haven't heard much great things about cingular.

Corporate branding thing. They need a brand name they can market across their entire product line. The AT&T brand has a lot more recognition and legacy value than the Cingulbar name. Ergo, AT&T Wireless becomes the brand name.
