How fast is Cingular 3G in US ?

I'm deciding between sprint / cingular.

who has better / faster 3g? I heard sprint is planning upgrade to 4G in 2007.

What are your opinions?

Sprint may be faster, I don't know. But, one major difference is that, inspite of Sprint's claims, their coverage area is very limited. I think they really have the smallest coverage area of the 4 largest carriers.
With Cingular you can get 3g coverage in almost all major cities, sprint is more questionable.
However, the final question is up to you to find out. Where do you live and what kind of coverage does each give you?
Check their websites, and see if you can try out their cards for a while and return if not satisfied.

Actually, I'm not interested in their pc mcia cards.

I live in a large metro area in the south US.

I just want to purchase a smartphone and connect the phone to my laptop as a modem to connect to the internet at fast speeds.

I was wondering if cingular was faster then sprint etc ?

tethered via usb with cingular and a v3xx...the v3xx is a 3.6mbps phone but for the moment the network is capped at 1.8mbps

The answer is the same, It makes no difference whether it is a phone or a card.
If the phone is 3g capable then it should give you the highest speed available.
And, as I said, it depends upon where you are. If Sprint is faster in L.A. than
Cingular, it will do you no good if you are in an area where sprint provides no service, but Cingular does.
