Norton has never let me down, and I get attacks every time I play around on my favorite warez sites. I make it a point to download the most current definitions from symantec.com before I take part in any risky activity and I've only had one virus get by Norton in the 5 years I've been using it.
If you want to talk about how useless you think antivirus software is, please start your own thread in the computer forum. But as for this thread, the question presented in Nic's original post has been answered. It's done.Last edited by Brad729; 01-19-2006 at 08:48 AM.

well, here's my take.
i want to have an antivirus program. that's my opinion, and i don't want to be talked out of it. i'm sure what you're saying works for you, but i'm not a pc expert. my theory is that i don't want to learn something that i don't need to do.
i've learned my lesson and am trying to limit any questionable or problematic material from getting on my pc. i want an antivirus to protect me and as a piece of mind. i'd also like a notice that i'm infected. i've also had in-depth conversations with my company's IT guy who recommended not even connecting online without an AV program. i'm going to trust his advice.
i appreciate EVERYONE who posted an opinion to try to help me out. let's remember that i asked for help. maybe we got off topic a little at times, but it was in the spirit of helping a community member.
thanks again to everyone!

I use the free software from my Roadrunner provider. It is Computer Associates eTrust EZ Armor. I have found that it works great and I have had no undetected intrusions or ifnections with it.
To answer another question, whether or not you need the software firewall; I personally rely on my Windows XP firewall in combination with my router's NAT firewall. EZ Armor comes with a firewall, but after reading all the various computer magazine's thoughts on the subject, I opted not to install it. As I stated earlier, I have had no undetected intrusion or infections with this combo.
Honestly, I am surprised that you have had problems with Norton. For me, the only reason I don't use Norton anymore is because I got the free stuff through Roadrunner.LG VX9900 (enV)

I can sum it up in one word AVAST. Norton = Resource hog, Mcafee = need I say more lol. I have used avg and is pretty good but avast has out done them all and it is free. Just personal prefrence I know, but that what I put on all the computers I build for people and never had a problem. Just recommended is all. I have DSL now but had RR and I will never put anything that they give me on my PC lol. I set it all up myself and put my own stuff on. You have no idea how many pc's I have fixed after they have gotton RR or DSL lol.

Avast, huh? I'll have to look into that one!
AVG is working pretty well, as far as I can tell.

Avast keeps guard of everything. Internet mail-p2p-Standard shield-Network Shield-Webshield which has saved me quit a few times. Have you ever went a web site and all of sudden you have malware and stuff like that on your pc when you reboot. It downloads it automaticly from there website and you are at there mercy. This stops it and you can abort the connection asap.

Re: Your Choice of AntiVirus Software...
Had Mcafee...had Norton...I became an AVG refugee...by referral from a guy who fixes computers, when he reformatted my hard drive after horrendous virus attacks. So far, AVG has served me very well for no cost, no crap about no updates for software older than 2 yrs, no rebates/upc's to fuss with, simply--no hassles and no attacks.

Re: Your Choice of AntiVirus Software...
I had the free AVG, untill my computer got infected by a virus.
Now I have norton antivirus 2006.
It slows down slow coputers, buy it worth it's price, and it's sources.
I'm very happy with my choice.

Re: Your Choice of AntiVirus Software...
AVG was recommended to me...been a year+ and no probs. It dl's and instslls updates daily when I log on. Had mcafee...it turned out as said earlier, to be a resource hog and caused my other puter to crash. Norton would not offer update support for any edition over 2 yrs old so I got weary of them too, especially after they failed me.
I run Ad aware and spybot regularly as well.
