If you read my posts, I'm sure you've heard about my unfortunate events after trying to install Norton 2006.

After installing a new hard drive, reinstalling Windows XP, and talking with Norton reps for hours, I've come to the conclusion that Norton is not right for my computer any more.

That being said, and on to topic, what would be your choice for antivirus software and why?

I'll review to decide which new software to purchase.

    Thanks guys/gals,

    Nic

AVG is a good program, and the free edition does just as much as either Norton or any other virus program out there.

But, if your one of those ppl that think because you pay for something, it has to be better than anything free, do a google search.

no, i've done a lot of researching, but nothing beats hearing about personal experience with a product.

my main concern was whether avg was a full-time solution. and if people had any problems with it, or only good experiences.

getting my computer back up to speed last week was a pretty trying time. so i would like to do everything i can to avoid unnecessary problems.

thanks to everyone for all the input on my cpu posts!

ok nic, i did have a problem once with AVG but i believe i would have had the same problem with norton or mcafee. it let a virus slip through but it was a brand new virus that none of the companies had yet released definitions for.

now, if there was a reason i had to forsake my loyalty to Norton, i would go with McAfee because it is fairly easy to use and Microsoft endorses the crap out of it all over the place. i also stay up-to-date on Ad-aware which works fine for me, i had a bad experience with spy-bot so i just use ad-aware (i turned on all the spybot automatic settings and it took control of itself to the point i couldnt turn it off or deactivate it and my only choice was uninstall).

now, i have comcast (same as roadrunner) and i'm not using the free McAfee they give out to their customers. Let me check on that and get back to you later but I might be able to just give you the McAfee if I'm not going to use it (and it is the full pay-version you could go to the store and buy).

Format c: is my anti-virus solution. In my opinion there is no good anti-virus software. Virus are made to beat the software, and I've never seen an anti-virus program actually detect and remove a virus. It's a waste of money. Just backup your harddrive and format. For about $50 you can get a dvd burner and a bunch of dvd-r's.

that's funny Crash, because Norton has detected and deleted several files for me and saved me the trouble of formatting my drive numerous times. all you have to do is stay up-to-date on your virus definitions, and i always update my definitions before i start browsing the sites that usually give me viruses (umm aherm that would be the hacker sites because they do their best to keep people like me out and their sites are usually loaded with viruses at every turn. still, i have no problem as long as norton is updated).

but thats not what this thread is about, my opinion stands that if i couldnt use Norton, my second choice would be McAfee, and keep on top of updates

i was pretty loyal to norton, until the whole blue screen crash! plus their 'tech guys' were dummies who read a script. 'i assure you this will work, nic.' of course it didn't so i was refunded and washed my hands of norton.

not saying it's not good, just not good for me i guess.

let me know what you have on mcafee, brad. but if avg is solid for me in the near future, i might keep it as it loads super fast and doesn't bog down my pc like norton did.

I can format and reload OS on my rig in less time than it takes to do a full system virus scan. That's why I don't bother with that crap.

Yep, partitions and ghosting do wonders.

I guess you never heard the old adage "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." The whole point of this thread is that my friend Nic just went through the hassle of reloading Windows and doesn't want to have to do it again for a long time. He wants opinions on antivirus software, he did not ask for your opinion because he already knows what a pain in the it is to reload windows.

I think you need to read the FAQ again, because you are posting irrelevant garbage in this thread and it's not much appreciated.

A trash or junk post is one that is of no use to the forum. Some examples might be random keystrokes, a post that has nothing to do with the thread or forum you've placed it in, series of smilies, or posts that say little more than "Thank you" or "Cool tone."
