    Re: Networking 101

Ok, I need a bit of help.

So, I want to create a ,what I call, "Memory Master 3000" with over 6 terabytes of memory. So building the PC won't be no problem, then I want to get a built in router something put in the PCI slot. Then, i want to connect to a router, that is connected to my net, which will connect it to my pc. That is not all, then, after setting password and what not, what will I need to know in order to make it so I can access any file on this computer from my friend's computer a block away. We are both building this machine, and keeping it a my house, and we want to be able to access files, even if I'm not home. How would we do this, what would we need, what would be the most cost effective router, and do I need a special plan for it?

I am currently using Qwest HIgh Speed (5Mbps transfers) wit MSN Premium (My friend has the same exact service too)

    Any help would be appreciated.

No offence or anything, but I have no idea what you are on about.

I'm more of a visual person.

    What do you mean by:

You mean you want this computer to be a router? If so... You would need two network card on this computer. This would be a cost effective and cheap solution.

There are lots of solutions available for you to choose from:

    1. You can run a wired CAT5 Cable to your friend house as long as it does not reached over a distance of 100 Metres.

    2. Create a VPN Connection.

    3. Use windows Remote Access in windows XP or use a program call Real VNC

    4. Point to Point Wireless connection

I would recommend you using number 3 because it wouldn't cost you much beside purchasing the license for REALVNC.

If your using windows XP then you can use remote assistance and it would be free.

All you need to do is buit that machine up and then connect it to your router set that computer up to a static ip address then port forward all connection that RealVNC use to that computer that you have set up to access all the data on that computer.

    Re: Networking 101

What I mean by "built in router in the pci slot or sumthing" is two ethernet ports instead of the normal one. So it acts kind of like a router, so I can hook one pc to the net, while it is hooked to mine at the same time. In which mine is connected to the net too.

Another idea, but I don't know much about this... Is there a way to file share the files on the pc, I wouldn't want to do that in case (I mean, someone else gets in, and harms our backups) But yes, I just want to make a computer, that I can get info from, when I'm anywhere around the world. So I just put in the direct IP address and I can go into the pc.... But I don't know too much about this kind of stuff. Would I need to use some sort of software like a program that lets me connect to the pc and would allow me to see the files and just "download" them?

Best bet and mose secure way is to just set up a linux box, always on, and use scp or apache web server to get to your files, all you need to do is set up two accounts, one for yourself and your friend, and thats it, ready to go.

So I'm pretty much creating a server huh?
Would the multiple ethernet adapters be necessary on the back of the "Memory Master 2000". Becuase the less money I spend on that, the more storage space I can get. And, another thing, my mobo (my old one) has two SATA slots, would I need to get a new power supply, or will there be some sort of adapter so I can use them, becuase they use a new power connection, but it hasn't really taken full swing yet, so maybe they will use the current power supply, I dunno, I have yet to see SATA hard drives in my area.
Live life to the fullest. Even if full is over 3.75 a gallon! (Wow, I wrote this two years ago, and that is when I was paying 2.35 a gallon, I now pay 3.50!)

Technology Solution for Broadband Communication-Part 1

Today’s broadband solutions are quite complex and require semiconductor manufacturers to integrate a wide-variety of innovative technologies to offer low power, cost-effective system solutions that address the needs of original equipment manufacturers, service providers, and end-users. This paper provides an overview of the various broadband infrastructure, access and home networking technologies and examines the essential technology building blocks required to deliver end-to-end broadband connectivity from the infrastructure to end-point devices.

I have no idea what you are talking about.
Anyway, my above post didn't work because my laptop seems to be configured wrong.
So, I connected my cable router to a Linksys N wireless router, and all three computers are running wireless.
