Hello,
I need to take my computer to a computer repair shop for an upgrade, and I want to erase all sensitive information on it, such as cookies, internet history, some office documents, and other things. I created a few CDs with the documents that I need ( inluding my personal photos and emails ) and now I want to erase the other files without formating the drive.

Well, first think if you need to have your HDD in the PC when you bring it in. If not needed, don't bring it. NO MATTER WHAT (unless you "shred" the files), they will ALWAYS be recoverable after they are deleted (except when physically damaged).

if you've taken everything off from your computer that you need, you could do a low level format and r-install everything. That would wipe everything off the computer.
If your system isn't that old, it may have come with a system recovery disk. If it did, you can use that also. It will wipe everything off the HDD and restore the computer back to the way it was when you first got it.

What exactly needs to be done with the PC man? We can probably walk you through it. And you will TOTALLY feel it on your wallet... before I new anything about PCs ( lol), I went to the local computer shop (Alliance Computers) and they charged me WELL over $100 for a 350Watt power supply and installation (I think labor was ~$85 [?]).
And like I said... IF YOU DON'T NEED ANYTHING INSTALLED, DO NOT BRING IN YOUR HARD DRIVELast edited by Robb4248; 03-05-2007 at 07:23 PM.
