OK, so right now i have an IDE hard drive with an IDE to SATA converter... I want to upgrade my hard drive to SATA, but i want good performance, such as a 10,000 RPM hard drive. I only have SATA 3Gb/s on my motherboard, will that work with this hard drive? Newegg.com - Western Digital Raptor WD1500ADFD 150GB 10,000 RPM 16MB Cache Serial ATA150 Hard Drive - OEM
It just confuses me, because theres SATA 3Gb/s hard drives, so I'm wondering if i can only get one of those. If this hard drive won't work, what type of connection would i need on the motherboard to run this hard drive?

Re: Hard Drive Connections Question
Well, if you look at the HDD, it runs at 1.5Gb/s. 3Gb/s is 100% backwards compatible with 1.5Gb/s, so it would run, although it would not have the full capabilities (Transferring at 150 MegaBITS per second, versus 300 MegaBITS per second) of the 3Gb/s which you have on your motherboard.
So I'd say if you don't mind the extra cost, go ahead and spring for the 3Gb/s for the faster connection.

Re: Hard Drive Connections Question
The thing is, the raptor only comes in the 1.5gb/s version.
So then you have to decide, is 10000rpm worh only having 1.5gb/s?
I think it is. But thats just my opinion. Plus, thats why a 74gb raptor (10000rpm, 16mb cache, 1.5gb/s) will cost more than a 250gb hard drive (7200rpm, 16mb cache, 3gb/s)
